Chuwi introduced a line of Surface-inspired tablets earlier this week, and now the company has confirmed plans to sell the SurBook tablet in the US through an upcoming Indiegogo crowdfunding campaign.

According to a promotional website, the Windows tablet has a 12.3 inch, 2736 x 1824 pixel display, an all-metal design, a built-in kickstand and support for a pressure-sensitive pen and detachable keyboard. It’s clearly not just the name that’s inspired by Microsoft’s Surface tablets.

Other specs suggest the tablet will be cheaper than most Surface models though.

The tablet is powered by an Intel Celeron N3450 Apollo Lake processor for instance. That quad-core chip should offer better performance than the Intel Atom chips used in some older entry-level Surface tablets, but it’s not as powerful as the Core M3 chip used in the entry-level Surface 4 Pro.

Chuwi’s SurBook features 6GB of RAM and 128GB of eMMC storage, dual-band WiFi, and a 10,000 mAh battery.

There are two full sized USB 3.0 ports and a USB Type-C port and the tablet has a 5MP rear camera and 2MP front camera.

Chuwi hasn’t announced pricing yet, but plans to offer early-bird deals when the crowdfunding campaign goes live. People who sign up to be notified of the campaign’s start date are also entered into a contest to receive one of two free SurBook tablets.

  1. I find it shady when established companies that have sold several products make use of crowdfunding.

  2. “The bitterness of poor quality remains long after the sweetness of low price is forgotten” – Benjamin Franklin

  3. 1. Chuwi doesn’t exactly have a reputation for solid, reliable builds. At best the reliability reported from owners is… polarizing.

    2. A Celeron chip? Really? Surface 4’s shouldn’t even be in the same sentence as a comparison, looks notwithstanding. Yes, the article said the CPU is less powerful. But seriously, that makes this device uninteresting enough that I’m doubtful it even deserves a mention / article at all.

    3. This is an established company that already makes lots of tablets / laptops / etc. They have the requisite supply chains / capital / etc. Why the hell do they need a crowdfunding campaign?! It would be like seeing ASUS run a crowdfunding campaign for a new Transformer tablet. It makes no sense, and sounds fishy as hell. I suspect this is a device that’s hoping to stumble upon a niche demand / market because they didn’t have anything in mind when they designed it.

    1. #2??? You do realize, don’t you, that the Microsoft Surface 3 has an Intel Atom CPU, which is a less powerful processor than the Celeron processor in these ChuwiBooks? If you look at the processor benchmarks, you will also see that the new Celeron in the ChuwiBooks is nearly as fast/powerful as the m3 CPU that is in the Surface Pro 4.

I assume that many people would love to have a Surface-clone that costs less than half as much as the entry level SP3, yet delivers almost as much performance.

  4. I wonder isn’t there any patent rights. Anyone can copy anything. Innovations happens in west and low cost clone from east. Also that would be of one third price. Is the price only one determinant like chinese low cost less featured close phone. They have copied iPhone already in trouble now copying unique form factor and wonderful product like surface pro

So may be world is getting redefined on cost driver and as per Harvard celebrity professor clay Christensen this is complete disruption.

    1. Good sir, tell me one thing, who are you referencing when you say ” They have copied the iPhone” are you saying that apple invented the smartphone?, Because if so, you are completely wrong. Android, an American invention released there first concept in 2005, or even before that, Microsoft sold the pocket pc, from 1999 to 2005, with a full color touchscreen, or even before that, Simon released the first real smartphone in 1992, with a touch display used with a stylus. Our east friends with the use of Android and Windows, come up with amazing, innovative technology like Samsung Galaxy s8, or the LG G6, both phones that lead the smartphone in innovation, usually, when the smartphone is innovated, it’s companies like lg and Samsung who come up with the great technology, then apple comes along a couple years later, takes it, then calls it their own, examples, big screen Samsung, NFC Samsung, fingerprint scanner HTC, widgets Android, multitasking Android, and future things apple will adopt from our friends in the east, bezeless screen Samsung, iris scanner Samsung, wireless charging Samsung and LG, the list goes on. My point is, our friends in the east know what the hell they are doing when it comes to TECHNOLOGY, they are innovative, apple on the other hand, is not.

    2. Microsoft’s Designs are reference designs. They want oem’s to copy them to help sell windows and lock users into their platform. That was intent behind the surface line to push manufacturers in the direction MS wanted. I did not know Chuwi copied the iPhone or are just lumping all Chinese manufactures together?
