Samsung’s next flagship phone will be unveiled at an event on March 29th. But thanks to a series of leaks, we already know a lot about the upcoming Samsung Galaxy S8 (probably).
Now we also have a pretty good idea of what it will look like, thanks to a leaked press picture from @evleaks and a few leaked videos that’ve been making the rounds.
The Galaxy S8 is an important phone for Samsung, since it’ll be the first high-profile mobile device from the company since the disastrous launch of last year’s Galaxy Note 7. But it doesn’t look like Samsung is playing it safe: the Galaxy S8 marks a departure from earlier Galaxy S phones in a lot of ways.
Update: Oh look! BGR has more hands-on photos.
First up, it looks like Samsung is getting rid of the home button on the front of the phone and moving the fingerprint sensor to the back. This lets Samsung reduce the size of the top and bottom bezels, and the company has pretty much eliminated side bezels by going with an Edge-style display that bends around the sides of the phone.
In other words, expect a very high screen-to-body ratio.
The placement of the fingerprint sensor on the back of the phone is a bit controversial: instead of putting it below the camera, Samsung appears to have opted for a fingerprint reader that’s next to the camera. It remains to be seen how many times you’ll actually cover the camera when trying to unlock the phone before you get used to the arrangement.
Rumor has it that Samsung will offer Galaxy S8 phones with two different screen sizes: a Galaxy S8 with a 5.8 inch display and a Galaxy S8+ with a 6.2 inch screen. But thanks to the reduced bezels, the smaller model might not be all that much larger than a 5.1 inch Samsung Galaxy S7.
The company is expected to offer the Galaxy S8 with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 processor in the US and some other markets, while other regions will likely get a version powered by a Samsung Exynos 9 8895 processor.
Samsung is expected to use 2560 x 1440 pixel Super AMOLED displays for its phones and outfit them with 12MP rear dual-camera systems, 8MP front cameras, iris scanners, 4GB of RAM. 64GB of stroage, microSD card support, and IP68 dust and water resistant cases.
