LG’s next flagship phone is coming later this month. But while the LG G6 hasn’t been officially unveiled yet, LG is starting to talk up some of its features… and one thing the company has just confirmed is that it’ll have that 2,880 x 1,440 pixel display with an 18:9 aspect ratio we’d heard about.
Why? For better multi-tasking.
LG describes the upcoming phone’s 5.7 inch display as “FullVision,” which it has a wide aspect ratio will make movies and other content look good in full screen mode. But if you take advantage of Android’s new(ish) multi-window support, you can now view two apps in side-by-side square windows that are exactly the same size.
LG has also updated its Android skin and some of its core apps to take advantage of the new screen. For instance, the updated camera app includes a Square Camera feature that lets you snap square images using a viewfinder on one side of the screen and then review the picture in the other window before deciding whether to share it online.
The G6 will also feature a new LG UX 6.0 user interface for its Android 7.0 software which places an emphasis on squares:

18:9 screen ratio. LG needs to take basic math again. That’s better described 2:1.
Wow- yes ratios normally are simplified. I wonder why they picked these particular numbers. Why no 17:8.5, or go for the brass ring and call it 100:50. Beat that Samsung.
I’ve wondered about that. I assume it’s presented that way to be more easily compared to 16:9 so people don’t need to convert.
The difference between math and marketing…
5.7″ is just too big for me (and most people). They should have made it smaller or a smaller version and then I might consider it. Whilst I loved the G3, 5.5″ was just too large and didn’t fit in all my pockets. My next phone was an S7 solely because it was smaller.
Most people? Apple’s plus size phones are a major hit. Many manufacturers are making larger phones. I doubt that would be happening if they were not selling. I have a 5.7″ phone and find it to be the perfect size for me. Fortunately there is a wide range of sizes available. I am glad I am not in the camp of men with tiny hands. 😉
You should have just said “too big for me” instead of adding the “most people” comment. *Personally* I consider my 6″ phone medium size. Would love a 7″ phone @ 16:10 (or even 3:2). Never had an issue with 7″ slim tablets in my backpockets or (occasional) front. I also don’t wear men’s skinny jeans 😉
I’ve got a 6″ phone too, and while sometimes it’s a little tricky to handle one-handed, I still find myself wishing that I had a bigger screen. I even briefly considered getting the Note 8 LTE, adding a bluetooth earpiece, and using it as my primary phone. Never had a problem getting my 6″ phone into a pocket, though I can imagine I might have trouble if I’d gotten the 8″.
But the G3 is a 16:9. Assuming I did my math right, the G6 ( 5.7sin(arctan 9/18) ) is .15″ narrower than the G3 ( 5.5sin(arctan 9/16) ). So unless your problem was with the height of the screen, this should actually be an improvement for you.
The height is a problem indeed, because you can’t reach the uppermost part of the screen.
When I read “didn’t fit in all my pockets”, I assumed that meant width. But fair point; this may not be the phone for you. Still, there are many out there who revel in options, and having to use a second hand or adjust grip to reach the top of the screen is a fair exchange for many who want the screen real estate. I might make the move to a phablet at some point myself.
5.7 isn’t too big depending on other dimensions. I like the 6.4″ Mi Mix screen.
You are forgetting that so many cell phone users require a backup “oar” in case they get stranded at sea. The target market is California Millennials who live in Cargo Shorts and dream about learning to stand on a surfboard.
Bob, I know my eyesight is poor nowadays (I use a large monitor so I can make print on screen large enough to read comfortably) but I can’t find anything claiming this phone is waterproof. If this phone isn’t waterproof than it would be useless to take surfing — the phone would be ruined in mere seconds.
This looks much cooler than I expected. :O
Not a fan of this rez. I can understand their logic but I’d rather have a 16:10 or even 3:2 phone for when I’m spending hours on a single app vs the occasional split-screen view that makes a medium size-ish phone (5.7″) into a really tiny one.
The best computer resolution is 1:1.414 (or 19.8:14 or √2).
Why?
Its perfect for scaling-up, and allows two-windows to sit side-by-side perfectly.
It’s also halfway from a square 1:1 and a rectangle 2:1, and close enough to the “golden ratio”.
This makes it suitable for handheld tablets, and pocketable phones.
See ISO 216, the A4 paper sizes.
And to go even better, we should’ve used binary numbers for our resolution.
Stick to science and maths, rather than Hollywood’s religion.
Since computers use binary, having resolution scale alongside transistors can help engineers that build the innards calculations and work more efficiently.
Here’s what I mean:
1,2,4,8,16,32,64
E7 == 128 x 90
E7+ = 180 x 128
E8 == 256 x 180
E8+ = 362 x 256
E9 == 512 x 362
E9+ = 724 x 512
E10 == 1024 x 724
E10+ = 1448 x 1024
E11 == 2048 x 1448
E11+ = 2896 x 2048
E12 == 4096 x 2896
E12+ = 5792 x 4096
E13 == 8192 x 5792
E13+ = 11584 x 8192
If it does not have a replaceable battery, I’m not interested.
The particular example with the letterboxed video in a splitscreen is cringeworthy. Maybe the idea is fine, but their demo makes me shiver.
