Plex is a media center application that lets you stream online video from multiple sources, as well as media stored on your device, all from the same user interface.
Now the company has announced plans to bring streaming news from channels including CNN, CBS, Fusion, Fox, CNET, and AJ+, among others. That’s because Plex is acquiring Watchup, a streaming news service that has deals in place with all of those organizations.
Watchup says it currently streams about 3,000 videos from news publishers every day. The company currently offers iOS, Android, Amazon Fire TV, and Nintendo Wii versions of its service, and Watchup says those apps will “continue to be available for a few months.”
You can create a custom news video feed by selecting your preferred channels and then liking or disliking individual stories. But eventually the Whatchup name and its standalone apps will go away.
The ultimate goal is to integrate the company’s technology into future versions of Plex.
This is great! I’ve always found the 3rd-party streaming features of Plex to be a weak spot.
