Microsoft may be making the case that low-cost Windows laptops are a better choice for classroom use than Chromebooks. But PC makers seem to want to have it both ways: Acer unveiled new Chrome OS and Windows laptops for education this month. And Lenovo is offering Chrome and Windows versions of notebooks with identical hardware.

In fact, several of the Lenovo laptops Microsoft highlighted in its announcement will be available with a choice of Windows or Chrome OS… and the Chromebook models will invariably be cheaper.

Here’s an overview of four of Lenovo’s upcoming Chromebooks:

  • ThinkPad 11 e Chromebook coming in May for $369 and up
  • ThinkPad 11e Yoga Chromebook coming in May for $449 and up
  • Lenovo N23 Chromebook coming in February for $199 and up
  • Lenovo N23 Yoga Chromebook coming in May for $279 and up

Windows versions of the ThinkPad 11e and 11e Yoga will sell for $519 and up and $599 and up, respectively… although they’ll also be available sooner, with an expected release date sometime in February.

Lenovo also has a new Windows-powered Lenovo N24 laptop on the way, but pricing for that model hasn’t been announced yet. It’s coming later in the year.

Detailed specs for the new Chromebooks aren’t available at the moment, but Lenovo says the new ThinkPad models are MIL-Spec tested, feature water-resistant keyboards, “the latest generation Intel processors” and 10 hours of battery life.

The Lenovo N23 series laptops are cheaper models with ARM-based processors, but Lenovo says they also have 10 hour batteries, water-resistant keyboards and reinforced hinges and ports.
