The original Asus Chromebook Flip was kind of a revelation. Like many Chromebooks, it was basically a cheap computer with Chrome as its operating system rather than Windows. But it was also small, light, and a convertible tablet. Once Google rolled out the ability to run Android apps on a Chrombeook, it was like the $200ish Asus Chromebook Flip became a 10 inch Android tablet that also just happened to be a notebook with a real keyboard.
But the Chromebook Flip has a relatively slow processor, a relatively low-resolution display, and not a lot of memory or storage.
Want a beefier Flip? Meet the Asus Chromebook Flip C302.
The new model is also a convertible laptop with a 360 degree hinge and a touchscreen display. But it has a faster processor, a bigger and higher-resolution display, more storage, and optional support for more RAM.
It also has a bigger price tag: the Chromebook Flip C302 starts at $499.
The notebook’s existence has been a pretty poorly kept secret. But Asus officially added the C302 to its website during the week of CES… and this is the first time that the company has officially confirmed that the C302 is called a Chromebook Flip, which means it’s in the same family as last year’s low-cost model.
From what I hear, it’s unlikely that there’s a new budget version on the way, which is kind of a shame because I’d really love a duplicate of the original Flip with a newer processor and a better screen.
As for the Chromebook Flip C302, here’s a run-down of the specs:
- 12.5 inch, 1920 x 1080 pixel display
- Intel Core M-6Y30 or Core M-6Y75 CPU options
- 4GB or 8GB of RAM
- 32GB, 64GB, and 128GB eMMC storage options
- Backlit keyboard
- 802.11ac WiFi
- Bluetooth 4.2
- Two USB 3.1 Type-C ports
- 39 Wh battery
- SD card reader
- HD webcam
The convertible Chromebook measures about half an inch thick and weighs about 2.6 pounds.
