Most of Chinese phone maker Gionee’s devices have been smartphones with decent specs and mid-range prices. But the company’s new M2017 is a high-end phone that only seems like a bargain when compared with luxury brands like Vertu.
That said, this ¥6,999 ($1,007) smartphone does have decent specs, a distinctive design, and 7,000 mAh worth of batteries (thanks to two separate 3,500 mAh batteries) for extra-long battery life.
The Gionee M2017 features a 5.7 inch, 2560 x 1440 pixel curved AMOLED display, 6GB of RAM, 128GB of storage, an 8MP front camera and dual rear cameras with an iPhone 7 Plus-like setup that gives you 2x optical zoom thanks to the lenses on the 12MP and 13MP cameras.
There’s a fingerprint sensor, dual SIM support, Qualcomm Quick Charge 3.0, and a USB Type-C port, but no separate headphone jack or microSD card slot.
One odd choice? Gionee went with Qualcomm Snapdragon 653 processor, which seems a bit for a premium phone, since the chip isn’t quite as powerful as Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 821 processor.
There’s also a special edition version of the Gionee M2017 with 256GB of storage and Italian Alligator Leather on the back. That model is priced at ¥16,999 ($2,446).

Alligator leather is not worth $1400.
And I didn’t know they’re were Italian alligators.
That’s why it’s so expensive. Very rare.
Tell that to Alligator World. http://www.alligatorworld.com/…
A pair of shoes vs a flat strip on one side of a phone… yup basically the same utility and value to the customer.
So I assume it has a removable battery, since it comes with a second battery? Or is that just something to charge the main battery?
I guess with 128GB of storage I could live without microSD.
That was my first thought, but there doesn’t seem to be any indication of that. It’s more likely that it was easier to source 3,500 mAh batteries than 7,000 ones. So they put two in. Why they’re talking up the dual battery setup is anyone’s guess.
Chinese luxury phone with double batteries? Does it at least have the high-end feature of exploding while you are on your private jet? All the cool kids are doing it, Gionee!
‘256GB of RAM’ – wow, just wow
Whoops.
…there’s Alligators in Italy?

Meanwhile, back at the ranch, my Oukitel K6000 Pro has almost the same insane battery as this but only cost $150.
On the topic of large battery phones: there doesn’t appear to be a single phone out there 5″ or less with a large battery and the AT&T bands, preferably AMOLED. I just find that astonishing when there are so many ‘different’ phones out there.
Still rocking my Blu Studio Energy 2 which is android 5 and missing bands 5/12 and starting to really feel slow.
Yeah, I’d go for a dual battery phone, but I don’t really want a phablet-size.
