Been thinking of signing up for a Hulu subscription to you can binge-watch Law & Order, Broklyn Nine-Nine, or The Mindy Project? Then there’s some good news: Hulu has dropped the price of a subscription.

You can now sign up for the streaming video service for $5.99 per month to access Hulu’s large library of movies and TV episodes.

But the price cut isn’t necessarily good news for everyone.

Here are a few things you need to know about Hulu’s price change:

  • The new pricing is only good for the first year of your subscription. After your first 12 months are up, the price goes back to $7.99 per month, which is exactly what Hulu had been charging previously.
  • Hulu’s new price is only available for new subscribers. Already paying for Hulu? Then your price doesn’t change.
  • The price change only affects the “Limited Commercials” tier of Hulu. If you want the ad-free version of Hulu’s service, you’ll still have to pay $11.99 per month

Still, Hulu’s entry-level service was already cheaper than Netflix, which costs $9.99 per month. It was also cheaper than a monthly Amazon Prime Video subscription, which runs $8.99 per month for customers who aren’t paying $99 per year for Amazon Prime.

The new move could make Hulu an even more attractive alternative to those services… or encourage some existing Netflix or Amazon customers to sign up for Hulu to watch some of the shows that aren’t available from those providers.
