The developers behind CyanogenMod have scrapped plans to nightly builds of their Android 7.0-based operating system… because they’ve begun development of a version based on Android 7.1 instead.
In other words, the next version of the operating system will be called CyanogenMod 14.1 rather than CyanogenMod 14. It’ll incorporate the latest updates to Google’s operating system for phones, tablets, and other devices.
The reason nightly builds haven’t been released yet has to do with a change on Google’s side: in an effort to improve security, the company made it a bit more difficult for CyanogenMod’s developers to ensure that cameras work in all of the devices the team wants to support.
Eventually the goal is to make the custom version of Android 7.1 available not only for devices that can already run Google’s version of the operating system, like the Nexus 5X, Nexus 6P, and Google Pixel, but also for older devices that may never receive an update to Android 7.0 or Android 7.1.

Well, them rereleasing CM7 would be a problem because that’s Android Gingerbread. Their numbering is based on the Android version name’s letter, hence N = 14.
Hey, I got it right in the headline… it was just the actual article where I miss-typed. Whoops. 🙂

My head exploded on Thursday when I installed the (unofficial) CM14 on my Moto G gen 1.
This launched with Jellybean!
By budget android standards it did well to get 2 major updates from Motorola to Kitkat and Lollipop.
That CM have given it 2 more (and it runs great!) is a testament to their work, but also a damning indictment of the state of official updates.
Agreed, CM14.1 works great on my MotoG second generation. My phone is almost two years old and performs better than new.
Same here. I laugh at my friend an s7 edge.
Runs great on my 4-year old Nexus 4. Looking forward to CM14.1, which I now have on my OnePlus 2 as well. Much better than OOS…
Wow, you haven’t had to replace the battery in that Nexus 4 yet? I had over heating problems with the Nexus 4 since day one and that was the third one I had! It probably contributed to short battery life. I could never find a truly new battery and LG refused to sell me one or install one for me at my cost.
Nope, not really had any issues with my N4. Sure, battery life isn’t as good as it once was, but it still seemed to manage in the few times I’ve needed to use it as my daily due to other device issues (RMA repairs can suck). I’ve considered swapping the battery, but from what I’ve seen online, there is zero reliable supply, so… I just keep the old wireless charger at my office desk and keep it topped up.
Still probably my favorite phone in the past several years. Loved that laser etched back…
i also have the Nexus 4 which 4 year old device, and using CM14.1 beta from xda developers. but i have to say the phone is still smooth.
Yeah battery life is meah but the compact size is the strength of the device.
still not going to replace my Nexus 4 until i keep getting unofficial android updates.
Even after getting a new phone i will not sale it bcoz of its legend name “NEXUS” , and for its compact size, as i have seen these there is not many good phone in compact size hated google killed nexus,
Great news for my S5.
Already running 7.1 on my S5 and it’s awesome, crazy fast
Which ROM? AICP or CM?
