Microsoft’s Continuum for phone feature sounds awesome on paper: connect your Windows 10 Mobile smartphone to a display, mouse, and keyboard and you can use it like a desktop PC.

In practice, though, the feature has some serious limitations. Only some phones can handle it. Only Windows Store apps are supported. And apps can only run in full-screen mode on your desktop display… for now.

Microsoft has announced that the next major update for Windows 10 Mobile will add multi-window support to Continuum for phone.

When using an external display you’ll be able to resize Universal Windows Platform (UWP) apps, move them around the screen, and view multiple apps at the same time. Screen snapping will also work.

Other updates include the ability to customize your Start Menu independently of your Start Screen (right now Continuum for phone just mirrors your phone’s Start Screen as a Start Menu), the ability to put your phone to sleep (or at least turn off the screen) while using Continuuum, and the ability to pair your phone with a wireless desktop dock without even taking it out of your pocket, thanks to a proximity feature.

The update, code-named Redstone 2, isn’t expected to officially launch until April, 2017. But a preview version should begin rolling out to members of the Windows Insider program before then. Note that you’ll need a Continuum-friendly phone like the Microsoft Lumia 950, Lumia 950 XL, Acer Liquid Jade Primo, or HP Elite x3 to get the new features.
