The BLOCKS modular smartwatch is expected to begin shipping by the end of the year, and the team behind the project are currently taking pre-orders from folks who missed out on last year’s Kickstarter campaign.

We’ve seen demo videos of the modular smartwatch in action, and Blocks co-founder Serge Didenko gave us a lot of insight into the design of the hardware and its ecosystem when I interviewed him for the LPX Show podcast.

But now you can also get a pretty good look at some BLOCKs watches and modules in the real world, courtesy of the FCC.

Documentation for the watch has been posted to the FCC website, complete with photos of the watch system, a series of modules, and close-up shots of internal components including the watch’s primary 300 mAh battery and a smaller 95 mAh battery that can fit into a module.

There’s also a user manual that describes how the watch works.

The BLOCKS system features a round, 400 x 400 pixel watch face and a band that can be made up of a series of modules including parts with GPS, batteries, a heart rate sensor, or other hardware.

Powered by an Android-based operating system, the BLOCKS watch should recognize which modules are connected and let you use them right away. The watch does not run Google’s Android Wear, because it doesn’t have all the functionality necessary to allow the modular system to work.

As the user manual makes clear, you can interact with the watch through a variety of gestures, including a quick tap, tap-and-hold, swipe, drag, or rotate gestures. It supports a variety of watch faces and has a settings screen that lets you quickly adjust WiFi and Bluetooth, view battery power, or open the app drawer.

You can also see information about connected modules on the watch itself, including the amount of power left in the main battery and any connected external batteries.

One interesting module option is a “programmable button” module which can be configured to launch a watch app whenever it’s tapped, or toggle a function such as the flashlight.

The BLOCKS smartwatch is up for pre-order for $330. The watch is available in black or red and the price includes 4 modules.
