Windows 10 Anniversary Update gives you 10 days to roll back to earlier build

08/04/2016 at 11:15 AM by Brad Linder Leave a Comment

Starting with the launch of Windows 10 last year, Microsoft made it easy to roll back to an earlier version of Windows if you encountered problems. The gave users upgrading form Windows 7 or Windows 8.1 about a month to decide whether to roll back the update.

But Microsoft says most people didn’t need 30 days to make that decision: they either rolled back within a few days or not at all.

So starting with the Windows 10 Anniversary Update, which launched earlier this week, users now have 10 days to roll back to an earlier build.

win10 roll back

Richard Hay noticed that change and wrote about it at WinSupersite, where he also includes a comment form Microsoft indicating that the change was made to free up additional storage space.

One major reason there’s a time limit at all is that in order to enable users to roll back, Windows 10 hangs onto all the files necessary to switch back to a previous version of Windows. Deleting those files after 10 days instead of 30 will free up around 3GB to 5GB of disk space more quickly.

Note that once you roll back, you can always choose to update the operating system again at a later date. But you only get one roll back at a time: if you updated from Windows 7 to Windows 10 last week and then upgraded to Windows 10 Anniversary Update, I’m pretty sure you now have the option to roll back to the previous build of Windows 10… but going back to Windows 7 would require doing a clean install of the operating system.

With the first upgrade 30 days wasn’t long enough. Best to have a full backup available and keep that a long time.

Brother sent out an email indicating that their customers may need to uninstall and reinstall your printers/scanners after this upgrade.

Wow, Microsoft is really trying to get the Windows ecosystem on the lock-down, and enter the business of ads, user information, and services.

I guess they’re learning the hard way that they are NOT Apple, and Google is a bigger threat than they ever would admit.
