Another year, another iPhone… or two. Apple is expected to launch the follow-up phones to last year’s iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus soon, and it’s been widely reported that one of the key new features will be the removal of a feature: the new phones won’t have 3.5mm headphone jacks. Instead you’ll be able to plug headphones into the same Lightning connector that you use to charge the phones or connect them to a computer.
But according to a report from Bloomberg, there may be a couple of other major changes coming with Apple’s next-gen iPhones.
Bloomberg says “people familiar with the matter” have indicated that thew new phones will have a redesigned home button which “responds to pressure with haptic feedback.” Instead of a mechanical button which you can feel move as you press it, there will be a touch-sensitive button that provides feedback to let you know when it’s pressed, but which doesn’t actually move (unless you count the haptic vibration as movement).
Apple is said to be keeping the design of the phones largely unchanged, which means there will be 4.7 inch and 5.5 inch models that look a lot like the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus and the iPhone 6s and 6s Plus.
One major change is that’s expected to be exclusive to the larger model is a dual-camera system on the back.
While Apple wouldn’t be the first company to use dual cameras, the setup would be a bit different from most. Instead of using the two cameras to capture depth, the system is said to be designed to help users take better pictures in low-light situations by combining the data captured by two different cameras with different color settings to create a single picture.
Apple also wouldn’t be the first company to offer a phone without a headphone jack. The Motorola Moto Z and LeEco Le 2 smartphones both lack headphone jacks, instead allowing you to connect headphones using a USB Type-C adapter, or Bluetooth.
