HP is updating its line of Chromebooks with a new model featuring a starting price of $189, support for up to 12.5 hours of battery life and an optional touchscreen display.

The new HP Chromebook 11 G5 is the first Chromebook from the company to be available with a touchscreen, which HP says will come in handy when Android apps for Chrome OS become more widely available later this year.

As expected, the HP Chromebook 11 G5 features an 11.6 inch, 1366 x 768 pixel display and an Intel Celeron N3060 Braswell processor.

When configured with a touchscreen, the laptop should weigh about 2.61 pounds and get up to 11 hours of battery life. A non-touch model weighs 2.51 pounds and runs for up to 12.5 hours at a time.

Both features are about 0.72 inches thick and feature 802.11ac WiFi, Bluetooth 4.2, two USB 3.1 ports, an HDMI 1.4 port, a headset jack, and a microSDXC card reader.

HP will offer models with 2GB or 4GB of RAM and 16GB or 32GB of storage.

The laptop will be available “through channel partners” in July. It should hit retail stores in October.

While the HP Chromebook G5 won’t support Android apps at launch, Google is working to bring support for Android apps and the Google Play Store to all recent Chrome OS devices later this year. You don’t need a touchscreen to run Android apps, but some apps will probably work better than others on non-touch devices.

So far the only Chrome OS device that you can run Android apps on is the Asus Chromebook Flip, but Google plans to roll out support for the Acer Chromebook R11 and 2015 Google Chromebook Pixel soon. The feature should be coming to additional Chrome OS devices in the future.
