Most of the low-cost virtual reality headsets you can buy right now are just plasticized versions of Google Cardboard with straps on them. Not the Eny EVR01. It’s a complete VR solution and it sells for $80.
You don’t need an expensive, heavy backpack computer to immerse yourself in a virtual world with the EVR01. You don’t even need a smartphone. Inside the goggles there’s a 5-inch, 1280 x 720 display and all the rest of the required hardware, too.
Processing power is supplied by a quad-core Rockchip RK3126 clocked at 1.3GHz, while a Mali-400MP2 GPU provides graphical support. It ships with a gig of ram and 8GB or 16GB of internal storage, a micro SD slot for expansion, and a 2200mAh battery that Eny says will power the EVR01 for around 3.5 hours.
They’ve also mounted controls on underside of the headset to make it easy to navigate the pre-installed Android 5.01 interface. Headphones aren’t part of the package, so you’ll have to supply your own and plug them in to the stereo jack — or connect your wireless cans to the EVR01 via Bluetooth.
At the end of the day, Eny’s taken a low-end Android smartphone and fit it into a comfortable-looking headset. It’s not going to provide the kind of experience that an HTC Vive — or perhaps even a Gear VR — will, but if all you want is an inexpensive way to play around with virtual reality without taxing your phone or stepping over a tangle of cords, the EVR01 might be a decent option for you.
