CTL is updating its line of Chromebooks for education with a new model featuring an Intel Celeron N3160 Braswell processor, 4GB of RAM, 32GB of storage, and a semi-rugged design.

At first glance the new CTL NL61 Education Chromebook looks a lot like the  NL6x which launched earlier this year. But the new model has a newer processor and an extra 5 hours of estimated battery life, among other improvements.

The CTL NL61 Chromebook is up for order for $239 and should begin shipping in July. Later this year CTL will also offer a model with a touchscreen display.

The laptop is designed for use in classrooms, and it’s been designed to withstand falls of 70cm (about 2.3 feet), features a thicker rear cover than earlier models, and plastic bumpers on corners designed to minimize damage from bumps and drops. The keyboard and touchpad are also spill and moisture resistant.

CTL’s notebook has a 180 degree hinge that allows you to fold the screen flat, which could come in handy if you’re collaborating with someone sitting across a desk or table.

The notebook measures 11.8″ x 8.4″ x 0.85″ and weighs about 2.8 pounds, features two USB 3.0 ports, a USB 2.0 port, an SD card reader, and HDMI port. It has a 1MP webcam that can rotate to face the front or back of the laptop, and the NL61 Chromebook supports 802.11ac WiFi.

The NL61 Chromebook features a fanless design for silent operation, and the notebook has a “serviceable” battery that CTL claims should provide up to 14 hours of run time. Serviceable means the battery can be replaced by an IT professional at a school… or possibly by a savvy end user. But it doesn’t sound like swapping out batteries will be quite as simple as releasing a latch.

CTL will also offer models with an optional “X-Panel” whiteboard on the lid of the laptop, allowing you to write or draw on the lid and then erase your notes and start over again. The X-Panel is also designed to withstand up to 400 pounds of pressure from the top, providing extra durability.

While the CTL NL61 is aimed at the education market, it’s available for anyone to purchase from CTL.net.
