AMD’s new Bristol Ridge and Stony Bridge laptop chips offer a balance of performance, price, and power consumption.
But the company also has a new line of chips that puts the emphasis on performance. AMD showed off a bit of what its upcoming “Zen” chips can do at Computex this week, and says the first chips based on the new design on the way, with the first samples coming later in 2016.
The first Zen chip will be the upcoming high-performance desktop processor code-named “Summit Ridge,” but AMD says other Zen-based chips will be available for notebooks, servers, and embedded products.
In other words, the laptop chips that eventually replace Bristol Ridge will likely be based on Zen architecture, but the company is initially focusing on higher-power processors.
The new Zen processor architecture features 8 CPU cores and 16 threads and each CPU core should offer a 40 percent more instructions per cycle than AMD’s previous-gen “Excavator” CPU cores, which should offer a significant performance boost.
