Chinese company Xiaomi is probably best known for making smartphones that you can’t buy in the United States. But the company started offering a few products in the US last year, including headphones, a fitness tracker and portable battery.

Soon the company will be launching its first Android TV box for the US market. The upcoming Xiaomi Mi Box is a device that lets you stream internet video or play Android games on your TV.

Xiaomi has been offering Mi Box products in its home country of China for the past few years, but this is the first model to run Android TV software rather than the company’s own custom version of Android with the MIUI user interface.

The new Mi Box features support for 4K video decoding at 60 frames per second and it supports HDR video and HDMI 2.0a.

The TV box is powered by an ARM Cortex-A53 quad-core processor with Mali-450 graphics. The Mi Box has 2GB of RAM and 8GB of built-in storage, and supports Dolby Digital Plus and DTS surround sound.

It has a USB port that you can use for additional storage, and connects to the internet via 802.11ac WiFi. The box comes with a Bluetooth voice remote control and supports an optional Mi Game Controller, which is sold separately, and which has dual vibration motors and a 3-axis G sensor for motion controls.

  1. Ah, install a little Chinese Secret Agent in your bedroom and let it run around on you LAN 😉

    1. KODI hates Android now…because of all the shitty pirate boxes using the KODI logo.

      Their main Android dev quit.

SPMC is the KODI fork you should use on Android now.

        1. From the SPMC dev site:

“As far as I’m concerned, Nvidia Shield has basically cornered the
market, so is my main development device. More generally, Android TV
devices, amlogic devices and Amazon FireTV might be getting some love ;)”

He says he’ll no longer support Rockchip devices…but the Xiaomi appears to be an Amlogic S905X-H.

  2. The specs on this box are pretty week, quad core ARM Cortex A53 isn’t good.

    Very dissappointing

    1. That’s an older version. The new US-specific model doesn’t seem to be listed on the Mi.com website yet.
