Looking for a device that lets you strap a phone to your face to watch 360 degree videos and engage in virtual reality experiences? There’s no shortage of Google Cardboard-style headsets on the market… but Chinese smartphone maker OnePlus has a fancy new plastic headset with built-in straps that should make extended VR sessions a little easier.

Oh yeah, and the OnePlus Loop VR headset free… sort of.

The company is giving away the Loop headset in advance of the company’s OnePlus 3 smartphone launch event, which will be streamed in VR.

There are a few things to keep in mind:

  • While the headset is free, you’ll have to pay for shipping. Standard shipping to the US is $5, but expedited shipping costs more than three times as much.
  • Only 30,000 free headsets are available, and they’re going on a first come, first served basis.
  • There’s pretty heavy demand right now, and the OnePlus website seems to be struggling to keep up. I tried to place an order twice, and both times I got a 404 error message as a reward for my efforts.

If you do succeed in placing an order, OnePlus will ship the Loop VR headsets to customers starting on June 6th. The headset weighs about 13 ounces, and the company says it should work with most phones featuring 5 to 6 inch displays.

Of course, the Google Cardboard standard could become obsolete once Google’s new Daydream platform launches later this year. But hey, it’s hard to argue with the price of a free headset.
