MSI plans to show off a new line of portable gaming machines at the Computex trade show in Taiwan next week. The lineup includes at least three new gaming laptops, a few desktops, and one rather odd system: a VR-capable gaming PC in a backpack.
We’ll have more details soon, but here’s what we know so far.
MSI Backpack PC
Want desktop-class computing power for your virtual reality system, but don’t want to actually have to lug a desktop tower around with you? The MSI Backpack PC stuffs the guts of a desktop into a case that you can literally wear like a backpack.
MSI say the Backpack PC features a “high-end” Intel Core i7 processor and NVIDIA GTX980 graphics.
Even if you don’t plan to go anywhere with the computer, it could be handy when used at home with an Oculus Rift or HTC Vive game system, since you don’t have to worry about tripping over wires when you’re wearing the computer that the headset is plugged into.
Somewhat surprisingly, MSI isn’t the only company that’s decided to stuff a VR system into a backpack in recent months.
MSI GS63 Stealth Pro
While MSI will show off a few different gaming laptops at Computex, the GS63 Stealth Pro is the one that caught my eye, because it’s the most compact of the bunch.
The company says this 4.2 pound laptop measures about 0.7 inches thick and features an Intel Core i7-6700HQ processor and NVIDIA GeForce GTX970M graphics.
MSI also calls it “the world’s lightest gaming laptop that packs a powerful cooking system,” thanks to 5 heatpipes and “enhanced Whilrwind Blade fans” for quiet, but effective heat dissipation.
Other MSI gaming systems
The company will also show off the latest version of the Vortex gaming desktop we saw earlier this year, new GT73, GT83, and GS73 gaming laptops, and several motherboards, graphics cards, and desktops including a couple of all-in-one PCs with high-resolution displays and NVIDIA graphics.
