Google has stopped selling the Nexus Player through the Google Store… which shouldn’t be all that surprising since it’s been more than a year and a half since the Android TV box first went on sale.

But what is a little surprising is that Google seems to be pulling the plug on the Nexus Player without introducing a new model.

Update: Actually, there might be a new model on the way after all… although it’s most likely a very minor update.

The company isn’t exactly giving up on the Android TV space. Google recently announced new hardware coming from Xiaomi, Sony, Sharp, and RCA. But with the demise of the Nexus Player, Google offers several Nexus and Pixel smartphones, tablets, and Chromebooks, but no Nexus TV box.

You can buy an NVIDIA Shield Android TV box from the Google Store for $200 and up, or if you want a simpler media streamer, you can opt for a Chromecast device for $35 (or less – they’re currently on sale for $5 off).

But as Droid Life noticed earlier today, the Nexus Player is out of stock… and as The Verge confirmed, it’s not coming back.

Google says you may still be able to find the Nexus Player from some third-party retailers, but most of the usual suspects seem to be out of stock as well.
