After working together on the 2015 Nexus 6P smartphone, it looks like Google and Huawei may be developing a next-gen Nexus tablet.
Huawei has filed for a US trademark on the term “Huawei 7P” in a product category that covers phones tablets, wearables, and other electronic devices. While there’s virtually no other information about what the Huawei 7P is, the name suggests this could be an upcoming 7 inch tablet.
First, while Huawei does sell a line of its own phones with P in the model number, the letter usually comes before the number. So you have things like the Huawei Ascend P7, not the 7P.
Second, Huawei 7P sounds an awful lot like the Google Nexus 6P built by Huawei last year.
Third, the numbers used for Google’s Nexus product names describe the screen size, not how many products came before. So while it’s possible that a Nexus 7P could be a phone with a really big screen, it seems more likely that this would be a follow-up to the Google Nexus 7 tablet (which was last updated in 2013).
If that’s true, don’t expect the Nexus 7P to be a low-cost device like the original or second-gen Nexus 7. The P in the name probably stands for “premium.”
It’s possible that Huawei is seeking a trademark for something other than a Nexus tablet. And it’s possible that the company is seeking a trademark for a product that’s currently in development, but which may never see the light of day.
But if Huawei and Google are working together on a new high-end Android tablet with a 7 inch display… what features would you like it to have?
