There are a handful of smartphone cases that feature E Ink displays, allowing you to view pictures, eBooks, or other items even when your phone’s color display is off.
E Ink would like to see more of those smartphone cases… so the company has unveiled a turnkey solution for smartphone cases featuring a 2.9 inch ePaper display.
This is basically a design that case makers can adopt to create a smartphone accessory that not only protects your phone, but which also connects with it wirelessly so that the second screen can communicate with your device.
The design features a 2.9 inch E Ink Mobius display which is a low-power, black and white screen that only uses power when the image on the screen is changed.
E Ink’s solution uses NFC for the communication between your phone and the secondary display… and also uses NFC to power the second screen. Since energy is only required when the screen is refreshed, the screen can show a static image indefinitely. So there’s no battery in the case for the screen. Instead NFC is used to both power the display and to send content from your phone to the second screen.
