Qualcomm is on a chip-launching spree. The company has unveiled a new processor designed to help smartwatch makers offer devices with longer battery life and/or thinner designs, a new super-fast 4G LTE modem chip, and three new processors for smartphones.
The company’s Snapdragon 400 chip is one of the most commonly used smartwatch processors… at least among device makers using Google’s Android Wear software.
Qualcomm says its next-gen chip is 30 percent smaller, uses 25 percent less power, and has an integrated low-power sensor hub. It also features a new LTE modem and low-power WiFi and Bluetooth.
All told, it could lead to smartwatches that are slimmer and which offer longer run time.
This new mobile radio offers download speeds of up to 1 Gbps over 4G LTE networks that support Gigabit connections.
In other words, this is a chip that won’t be useful for a while in some parts of the globe. But as wireless carriers increase their speeds, your next phone might be ready to take advantage.
Qualcomm is also expanding its line of mid-range smartphone chips with three new models. They’re all based on ARM Cortex-A53 designs, but generally speaking the higher the number, the more powerful the chip.
The Snapdragon 425 is positioned as an update for device makers currently using Snapdragon 410 or 412 chips. It features Adreno 308 graphics, support for 16MP cameras, and Qualcomm’s X6 LTE modem.
The Snapdragon 435 is a bit more powerful, has Adreno 505 graphics, an X8 LTE modem, and support for 21MP cameras.
Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 625 processor has an X9 LTE modem, Adreno 506 graphics, and support for devices with up to a 24MP read and 13MP front-facing camera, as well as support for 4K video recording and playback.
