As expected, GPD has launched a crowdfunding campaign for a new handheld gaming device. But unlike most of the company’s products to date, this new handheld isn’t an Android tablet. It’s a tiny Windows PC.
The GPD Win is basically a laptop with a 5.5 inch display, an Intel Atom Cherry Trail processor, dedicated gaming buttons and direction pads, and athumb keyboard.
GPD says the full retail price will be $499, but if you back the company’s Indiegogo campaign you can reserve one for $299. It won’t ship until October though.

On paper, the GPD Win certainly looks like an intriguing option for Windows gaming on the go. With an Atom x5-Z8500 processor, a 1280 x 720 pixel touchscreen display, 4GB of LPDDR3 1600 RAM, 64GB of eMMC storage, and support for up to 128GB of microSD card storage, it should be able to handle some older PC games as well as some Windows Store games made for modern systems.
But you could also probably use the little computer to stream games from a PC using Steam in-home game streaming or similar technologies. GPD also suggests the computer could be used with emulators to play classic console games.
It has a D-Pad, two analog stick-style controllers, A, B, X, and Y buttons, a full QWERTY keyboard (that’s probably too tiny for touch typing, and a good range of input and output options including a mini HDMI port, a full-sized USB 3.0 port, and headset jack.
There are four shoulder buttons on the back of the case, as well as dedicated volume, start, select, L3, and R3 buttons next to the keyboard.
You can also slide a switch above the keyboard to enable mouse mode, allowing you to use one of the analog sticks to move a cursor.
GPD says the non-removeable 6,000 mAh battery should be able to provide up to 8 hours of battery life while streaming videos, or around 6 to 8 hours of game play time (depending on the games).
Other hardware specs include 802.11b/g/n WiFi and Bluetooth 4.0, stereo speakers, and a Corning Gorilla Glass 3 screen. It ships with Windows 10 Home software.
The GPD Win measures 6.1″ x 3.8″ x 0.8″ and weighs about 10.6 ounces. In other words, it’s a laptop-style PC with a clamshell design and support for Windows 10 software. But it’s not much bigger than a smartphone.
Thanks Victor C!

Wow, a clamshell UMPC! I’m getting it.
“gaming”
Cool. This has a more realistic funding goal and design when compared to the Dragonfly: https://www.indiegogo.com/proj… (original goal was just $10 – $20k).
Buying one now!
Well, technically you are just funding it. Until it ships. But I agree, it’s very tempting… But I really shouldn’t. No, I’ll wait.
I’m just being optimistic! I doubt they’re going to reach their unrealistic $100,000 USD goal.
I don’t think this would handle “Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel” would it?
The Z3740D handles it pretty well… So this wonder will too, and so many other games.
I can’t wait them to release it.
Not much bigger than a smartphone? I wish someone would make a windows 10 PC in the form of a phablet. It would make more sense to me than continuum. I could make Skype calls on it and hook it up to a monitor and keyboard to use as a desktop. We are rapidly approaching the point where we no longer need to make compromises.
What about something like this? An 8″ Windows tablet with 4G connectivity, and it’s pretty affordable.

Or slightly bigger 2-in-1 from Walmart:

I got one for $70 about2 months ago, and was checking a few days ago, and saw it had increased $10 to $80, and now it is up another $10 to $90! Guess they are taking off. A very usable size, with 1280×800 IPS 8.9 ” touchscreen and passable keyboard with touchpad, but the quality is sketchy – mine stopped booting a few days ago, and just hangs after initial POS memory check. Maybe something to do with a guy’s package to force Linux on it, and possibly damaged something with a wrong driver…
Atom processor? Gaming? Don’t think so….
You’re not going to be playing Crysis, but there are numerous older titles that are still pretty great compared to iPad games
Actually, you could play the original and second Crysis… Just not the newer releases like Crysis 3, though, it will actually play but the fps would be a bit too low, dipping below 15, even with lowest settings… but that should give a better idea of the threshold…
It’s more a question of whether they can keep temps under control well enough to prevent throttling… If they can then games like Fallout: New Vegas can be played at HD resolution and low settings with around 30 fps, otherwise it throttles and drops to 12-20 fps… thus the difference between playable from barely working…
indeigogo crowdfundings are so scammy tho. You don’t get the pledge money back if the project crap out.
How legit do you think this campaign is? I really like the idea of having a UMPC.

Well, GPD is an existing company that has already released products before so this has better chances of a release than most Indiegogo campaigns.
That’s true but I been burn too many time with indeigogo. It’s too much of a gamble even if the company is legit.
Thanks so much for your kind support for GPD WIN.If you are interested in GPD WIN.hope you can support us!!No matter the found raise is succeed or not.we will be surely complete this perfect device!!!Of cause,we all hope you can help us to make this campaign success. So we will have more confidence for GPD WIN!!!With many thanks again!!!
Thanks so much for you kind support for us!!
I don’t know but if you want to stream games they need to include ac band for wifi. Also at $500 with limited support for games on Window store, I rather get Android games anyday.
The dingoonity boards have said basically the same thing, an X7 would be better for GPU power, AC wifi better for streaming, a different keyboard layout better for gaming (who thought putting all the letters under your left thumb was a good idea?). What are the chances they’ve cheaped out and put a single stream single band 2.4GHz N grade card in?
Gah I’m irritated but I’ll buy one anyway just to see the return of the UMPC.
Not sure about this… I need the processing power to support the Football Manager database manipulations. Or the graphics to support… ? Games from GOG?
