Microsoft has been pretty aggressive at trying to get PC users to upgrade to Windows 10.

Through July, 2016, the company is giving away Windows 10 as a free update for anyone running Windows 7 or later. Users have probably noticed a new icon in their system tray urging them to update. And if you’re not careful, it might be possible to upgrade accidentally (Although it’s relatively easy to roll back to an earlier version of Windows, as long as you do it within 30 days).

Pretty sure you don’t want to install Windows 10? Microsoft is finally offering an official way to block the upgrade permanently.

Actually, there are a few different ways to do it, as outlined in a new support document.

The first is by installing a new Group Policy Object that makes it clear to Windows 7 or Windows 8.1 that you do not want to update to Windows 10.

The second is to use Computer Configuration settings to “turn off the upgrade to the latest version of Windows through Windows Update” in your Windows Update settings.

A third option is to edit a Windows registry key:

Subkey: HKLM\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\WindowsUpdate
DWORD value: DisableOSUpgrade = 1

And Microsoft also offers tips for simply hiding the “Get Windows 10 app” from the notification tray.

You can find more details in the Microsoft support page for “How to manage Windows 10 notification and upgrade options.”
