Samsung’s recent smartwatches run a Tizen-based operating system. Apple’s run watchOS. And a number of companies have released watches that run Google’s Android Wear operating system. There’s no shortage of smartwatch operating systems.
But AsteroidOS is different… because it’s a community-driven free and open source operating system that you can install yourself, potentially giving you more control over the software that runs on your wearable devices.
AsteroidOS is a community-driven project that’s still in the early stages of development. But you can already install it on the original LG G Watch.
Right now AsteroidOS has limited functionality. Bluetooth is only partially supported and there are only a handful of apps. So non-developers might want to wait a while before trying the software.
But if you do have some development experience, the creators of AsteroidOS are looking for people to help port the software to run on additional watches, improve performance, and add some core apps such as Settings, Agenda, Weather, and alarm/stopwatch/timer functions.
The operating system is compatible with Android Wear watches thanks to the libhybris library that offers Android drivers. The user interface, graphics, and SDK are based on OpenEmbedded, Qt5, and QML.
