The Acer TravelMate B117 is a new affordable, portable Windows notebook aimed at the education market. Like a lot of low-cost Windows laptops, the TravelMate B117 has an 11.5 inch display and an Intel Braswell low-power processor.

But Acer’s new laptop has a few special features including support for 4GB of RAM, Windows 10 Pro software, and a ruggedized case and spill resistant keyboard.

Acer says the TravelMate B117 also has a hinge that lets you tilt the screen back 180 degrees so it lies flat against a desk or table, while still allowing you to use the keyboard.

There’s also an LED light in the lid that can glow different colors to correspond with answers to questions — allowing teachers to see at a glance how kids responded to questions on multiple choice quizzes or see if kids have indicated that they’ve finished an assignment.

The notebook measures about 0.9 inches thick and weighs about 3 pounds, features 802.11ac WiFi, a USB 3.0 port, a USB 2.0 port, and an HDMI port as well as a Precision touchpad, a webcam with support for HDR capture and dual digital microphones.

Acer will offer models with Intel Celeron or Pentium processors, up to 4GB of RAM, and hard drive or eMMC flash storage options. I haven’t seen detailed pricing for all configurations, but Acer does says that a TravelMate B117 laptop with a Celeron N3050N CPU, 4GB of RAM, 32GB of storage, and a 1366 x 768 pixel display should be available to schools for about $250.

It’s not clear if similar laptops with similar price tags will be available to the general public.
