$10 per month seems to be the going rate for music streaming services. That’s how much Spotify, Apple, and Rhapsody charge. And Google Play Music subscriptions have been available for the same price.

But now there’s another way to pay for Google’s on-demand, ad-free streaming music service. You can get a family plan for $15 per month.

That lets up to six people stream music for one fee, which brings the price per user to about $2.50 per month for a family of six.

Some Google Play Music features are free to use even if you don’t pay a penny. You can upload music to the service and stream it to your mobile device or just about any device with a web browser. And you can listen to ad-supported, radio-like playlists for free.

But a subscription gets rid of the ads and allows you to listen to 35 million songs in Google’s content library at any time. The family plan lets all six users keep their own preferences, playlists, and recommendations. And each family member can stream music simultaneously.

At launch the Play Music family plans are available for Android users in the US, Canada, the UK, Australia, France, and Germany. While you’ll need to sign up an Android device (for now), you can listen on the web or using an iOS device.

Additional countries should be added to the list soon.

  1. The big question is – do all six users get Youtube Red as well?
If so that’s a pretty compelling option.
