Google recently rolled out an update to its smartwatch operating system to add support for new hardware, including watches with cellular capabilities and watches with speakers. The first watch to make use of both of those features was supposed to be the LG Watch Urbane 2nd Edition LTE, which was set to go on sale through AT&T soon.

But LG has canceled the watch’s launch, due to technical issues.

The company hasn’t decided whether it will try again at another date. So it’s not entirely clear if the watch has been permanently canceled or just delayed… but LG is using the word “canceled” in regards to the launch.

If you already ordered the watch from AT&T, the carrier will offer to refund you purchase or swap it out for a different smartwatch.

The LG Watch Urbane 2nd Edition LTE was expected to feature a 1.38 inch, 480 x 480 pixel round display, 768M Bof RAM, 4GB of storage, a 570 mAh battery, a Qualcomm Snapdragon 400 processor, WiFi, Bluetooth, GPS, and support for 3G and 4G networks. It’s not clear exactly what hardware problems led LG to scrap the launch plans for the watch.

Now that Android Wear officially supports cellular connectivity, it’s possible we could see other devices with these features in the future. But no other Android Wear hardware with cellular capabilities have been announced yet.

  1. What a shame, I mean I only wanted it for the speaker, amoled display and extended battery (nearly double the capacity of my Moto 360’s) but still, shame!

  2. Just wondering how many years it will be
before we’ll see widespread adoption of
smartwatches on par with cell phones
    running Android 2.3 Gingerbread, arguably
the first mass adoption of Android smartphones.

My guess is at least 3, unless some major
    breakthrough in power technology (including
but not limited to batteries) is incorporated
    in the meantime.
