Budget tablet maker E Fun has launched another, well… budget tablet. This one runs Windows 10, has an 8.9 inch display, and comes with a keyboard dock that lets you use the tablet like a little notebook.

The best think about the E Fun Nextbook Flexx 8.9? Its price tag: the tablet is available from Walmart for $139.

The tablet has a 1280 x 800 pixel IPS display, an Intel Atom Z3735G Bay Trail processor, 32GB of solid state storage, and 1GB of RAM.

Yeah, it’d be nice to have more RAM… but what were you expecting from a $139 tablet?

Other features include a micro HDMI port, and a micro USB 2.0 port. There’s also a full-sized USB 2.0 port on the keyboard dock.

The tablet supports 802.11b/g/n WiFi and Bluetooth 4.0 and has a 2MP rear camera and 0.3MP front camera. It has a 4,900 mAh battery.

E Fun offers three color options: black, blue, and purple.

  1. I currently have the Surface 3 and it’s decent other than the first one kept hard freezing even after multiple clean resets and the performance of the Marvell Avastar WiFi chip isn’t so great (10 – 50 Mbits/s on 2.4 GHz 802.11n and < 10 Mbits/s on 5 GHz 802.11n/ac). I like getting UMPCs (remember those!?) so the next size down I'd get would need to be much smaller. You know, phablet territory. Too bad I'm just part of the few who want those. Hopefully, MS' Continuum and Ubuntu's Phone/Touch OS takes off.

Anyway, I'm clearly not the target audience for this device but the specs seem pretty good for its price.

  2. These days… king in the low end Windows, is the newly released Cube iwork8 Ultimate, x5-Z8300, 2GB/32GB, 1280*800 8.0 inch IPS, Genuine English Windows 10, HDMI out, for $85 with free shipping from gearbest.
But it might be dethroned… depending on the upcoming 1920*1200 Chuwi Hi8 Pro release price.

    1. Thanks for sharing.. where do you keep up with the latest china HW?

I have to think a used Dell V 8 pro might be better value than a new cube though.. better GPU on the x5 i guess. Do you know of anything good with 4GB RAM/decent res? and/or something good with a keyboard dock?

      1. TechTablets and a few other sites are a good place to keep an eye out for what’s coming.
I think you’d find the V8Pro to be very outdated next to any Cherry Trail Chinese offering, but the $100/8″ category is sure to be dominated by the Hi8 Pro (rumored $95).
For a good 4GB model I can’t suggest anything but the Cube i7 Stylus.
It’s a Core M, 4GB RAM, upgradable 64GB M.2 SATA SSD 10.6″ 1920*1080 optically bonded IPS with Wacom Pen support HDMI out etc. for only $350.
A compromise would be the z8500 Teclast X98 Pro for $250…

      2. CNXSoft is another decent China hardware site. But remember to always check Lilliputing too 😉

  3. Wow. That is something. Time to warm up the reflow station and change the RAM from 1GB to 2GB (or more). I think you can do that with the Atom Z3735G right?

    1. Z3735G is 1 GiB max, you need to swap the CPU for a Z3735F or Z3736F (the only pin compatible ones) to get 2 GiB, I believe (but, who knows, it might just work). Also, it does it by using half a channel of RAM, so if the board doesn’t have anywhere to put the extra RAM, you’re screwed. And, the UEFI will likely need an update to change the SPD data.

If I had BGA rework equipment and skills, I’d be tempted to add the unpopulated RAM on my TW700 (and more eMMC while I was in there) just to see what happened, but I don’t.

  4. Is there any tablet/2-in-1 in this detachable form with decent specs and price? It seems like the only devices they make are either low-budget, poor-specs tablets like this one or extremely expensive, monster-of-a-tablet like surface pro.

    1. The only high end 8″ tablet on the market right now is the HP 608 G1. Seems odd that there is ONE high end pocket sized tablet on the market in a sea of garbage low end tablets. Almost feels like a conspiracy.

  5. A little smaller, if it doesnt fit in your back pocket, no point in buying a small tablet/laptop. Then with the crappy Z3735 garbage chip and low memory. Sick of this low end crap. But its a step in the right direction.

  6. This is when I scroll down, look at the RAM, sigh, and close the page.

  7. I’ve been waiting for a laptop around this size (7-9 inches). I’d love something thats like a throwback to the Sharp Zaurus, or the Sony Vaio P.

Unfortunately these specs are a little too pedestrian for me. I would need at least 2gb RAM.

    1. Imagine how awesome these devices would be if RAM were upgradable like it ‘used to be’!.. would be worth a lot more to me with more RAM, but I think they want them to be disposed of ASAP.

      1. I’m not that confident in a device like this ever having expandable memory. I would pick expandable (or swappable) storage over memory any day.

  8. That is surprisingly not that horrible. Windows 10 works reasonably well with 1GB of RAM for basic tasks (word processing, some music streaming, youtube, etc.) My wife has the HP Stream 7 and it is fine for a grab-and-got device. Having HDMI out this could be fun to use for the kids.
