Chinese phone maker Huawei made a bit of a splash in the West when the company partnered with Google on the Nexus 6P smartphone. Now Huawei is launching the next flagship phone that will be sold under its own name.

The Huawei Mate 8 has super-slim bezels on the sides of the display, a metal body, and a fingerprint sensor on the back of the phone (much like the one found on the Nexus 6P.

Under the hood the new the phone is powered by Huawei’s new Kirin 950 processor.

That’s an octa-core processor with four ARM Cortex-A72 CPU cores, four lower-power Cortex-A53 cores, and ARM Mali-T880MP4 graphics. It’s expected to be one of the fastest ARM-based chips released to date, although it remains to be seen what that means in terms of real world performance (and battery life).

Huawei’s new phone has a 6 inch, 1920 x 1080 pixel display, a 16MP Sony IMX298 rear camera, and an 8MP front-facing camera. The Huawei Mate 8 has a 4,000 mAh battery and support for dual SIM cards.

The company offers three models:

  • 3GB of RAM and 32GB of storage for 2999 yuan ($469)
  • 4GB of RAM and 64GB of storage for 3199 yuan ($500)
  • 4GB of RAM and 128GB of storage for 4399 yuan ($688)

The phone is expected to sell for about $550 and up in China. Huawei hasn’t unveiled release dates or prices for other markets yet.

I’d be interested but I decided last year I’d prefer to go through my carrier (T-Mobile) since I can upgrade yearly vs. every other year, especially if my device doesn’t get the yearly Google updated OS on time. How is Huawei’s track record with updates? Because if it’s anything close to Samsung then I’d rather just keep doing what I’m doing. If however they update within 3-4 months then I’d definitely be game to try this phone. I don’t think a 1080p screen is that horrible and though the Note 4 screen is, pretty to say the least, if this looks anything close to, say an iPhone screen then it’s not a huge letdown. Carrier, Nexus or this phone pending good OS updates.

  3. Wow, Huawei beats Qualcomm to A72 phones in China. Oh, how the mighty have fallen. The Mediatek A72 chromebook should be released soon too. Armv8 is going to rule the world!

    1. I am hoping the MediaTek chromebook gets some open source support. Seems kinda dumb to waste a processor that awesome on an OS that is 9/10 browser. If this could be a zippy convertible with support for linux then they’d have my money.

  4. I’m curious about the screen resolution. On the one hand I feel 1080 should be plenty on a screen as small as a cellphone. It certainly helps with the battery life. On the other hand I’ve been spoiled with the 1440 x 2560 resolution of my Note 4, so I wonder if I’d be disappointed if I switched to a lower res screen…

    1. Well for a 6 inches maybe 1080p is not that great because of a large screen, however great on battery life. I am contemplating to get one.
