HP is expanding its ZBook line of business-class, mobile workstation laptops with new models featuring 15 and 17 inch displays, Intel Skylake processors, and options for NVIDIA and AMD graphics.

One of the most intriguing models is the HP ZBook Studio. It’s a high-performance notebook with a 15.6 inch display, Intel Core i7 or Xeon processor options, and support for up to 32GB of RAM and up to 2TB of storage.

But the notebook is relatively compact, measuring about 0.7 inches thick and weighing 4.4 pounds.

The HP ZBook Studio should be available in December for $1699 and up. It will be available with a choice of 1920 x 1080 pixel or 3840 x 2160 pixel displays and HP will offer versions with or without touchscreens.

CPU and graphics options include:

  • Intel Xeon E3-1545M v5 with Intel Iris Pro Graphics P580
  • Intel Xeon E3-1505M v5 with Intel HD graphics P530
  • Intel Core i7-6820HQ with Intel HD graphics 530
  • Intel Core i7-6700HQ with Intel HD graphics 530
  • Optional NVIDIA Quadro M1000M discrete graphics

Other features include dual Thunderbolt 3 ports, dual cooling fans, 2 memory SODIMM slots, and room for up to two internal solid state drives. The notebook also features Gigabit Ethernet, 802.11ac WiFI, Bluetooth 4.0, an HDMI 1.4 port, two USB 3.0 ports, a headset jack and an SD card slot.

The ZBook Studio has a spill-resistant backlit keyboard, a 720p webcam and stereo speakers with Bang & Olufsen audio. The system is powered by a 64 Whr battery.

HP isn’t the only company offering a relatively compact mobile workstation: MSI recently unveiled the 4.3 pound WS60, Dell has a new line of Precision workstations including the 3.9 pound Precision 15 5510, and Lenovo was one of the first companies to announce plans to launch a laptop with an Intel Xeon chip… although now the 5.6 pound ThinkPad P50 is starting to look a bit heavy.

  1. I remember when .7 inches was razor thin. I had ultrabooks that were .8-.9″
