Laptop makers are starting to equip their computers with USB Type-C ports and some of those models support USB 3.1 or Thunderbolt 3 technology. That means you can not only plug in storage devices and other peripherals, but power cables, external displays, and other hardware.

Sounds good, right? But some of the first notebooks with Type-C ports have just one or two of those ports… so what do you do if you want to connect a bunch of peripherals?

satechi hub

Satechi has a solution: the company’s new Type-C Hub adapter connects to the side of your laptop, tablet, or other device and adds a whole bunch of features to your mobile device.

The $35 adapter has three full-sized USB 3.0 ports, a full-sized SD card slot, and a microSD card slot. It’s available in gold, silver, or grey colors, which helps it match the look of a Chromebook Pixel or 2015 Apple MacBook.

There’s just one catch: if you’ve got a device with only a single USB port (like the MacBook), you won’t be able to charge your computer while using the hub.

  1. Since this doesnt have power pass through, you can’t charge Apples crappy one port netbook while using this.

  2. Wow. How can anyone think this is more elegant and/or practical than including those ports the first place? Also, won’t this wear down the single port on that computer and break it off (which is also the only way to charge it BTW)? I still can’t get my head around this epic fail Apple did with this poor retarded iPadized Macbook…

    1. Presumably adding those ports would have thickened it up some. But having two USB-C ports would have been less absurd (the Pixel has two, along with two USB 3.0s, but it is quite a bit thicker).

      1. It sounds like something that would be correct, but as asus showed us, you can have a laptop that thin and have all the ports you need still. Especially since Core M is such a small chipset. It’s like phone manufacturers claiming they didn’t have space for an SD slot, when it’s not true. As to why Apple went this route, maybe it was just bad engineering or maybe they just want to press USB-C that hard.

        1. Yes I have no problems only having one USB port on the T100 (the new model of which has USB C), but it has a separate micro USB for charging. The argument of being thicker doesn’t hold, when micro USB is tiny (and the T100 is a thin tablet – as you say, Asus have no trouble keeping things thin without sacrificing ports).

A useful trick when I’m on holiday is that I charge my t100, and then charge all my other devices by plugging them into a USB hub into my T100, so I can charge loads of stuff from a single plug socket. Can’t do that with this apple laptop.

        2. It’s a gimmick to show off the whole “one port to rule them all” thing. Which is great, just make sure you have at least 2 or 3 of them and maybe some type A USB 3.1 ports since almost every device in existence uses that and adapters are annoying.
