Microsoft is holding an event on October 6th, and the company is expected to use the occasion to unveil at least two new smartphones and one new tablet: the Microsoft Surface Pro 4.

Aside from the fact that the tablet will probably have a 6th-gen Intel “Skylake” processor, there’s not much we know about it… but there are rumors.

According to W4pHub, the tablet could have super-slim bezels on the top and sides of the screen, as shown in the mockup above. As Dell has shown with its XPS 13 and XPS 15 laptops, it is possible to make a nearly bezel-free computer. But it’ll be interesting to see if Microsoft can pull this off in a tablet form-factor, since bezels generally help you hold the tablet without accidentally pressing the screen.

W4pHub says the tablet could have a sort of “smart frame” that adjusts sized to make the bezels smaller when the tablet is used with a keyboard and larger when you hold it in your hands. If that’s true, I imagine it’s not the frame that changes size so much as the usable portion of the display: maybe black bars will pop up around the screen to create a bit of a virtual bezel.

Anyway, one benefit of a super-slim bezel is that it could allow Microsoft to use a larger display without increasing the size of the tablet. The Surface Pro 3 has a 12 inch screen. Maybe the Surface Pro 4 will have a larger display?

According to a report from The Verge, Microsoft may also plan to increase the screen resolution. While the Surface Pro 3 has a 2160 x 1440 pixel display, The Verge suggests that the new model could have a 4K or 5K screen.

Moving from a 4th-gen Intel Core “Haswell” to a 6th-gen “Skylake” processor could give the tablet the graphics boost necessary to handle the higher-resolution display.

What features would you like to see in a 4th-gen Surface Pro tablet?

  1. I have a 5 year old son, and I prefer a THICK bezel. I had to put 3/4 inch rubber bumpers on all my iPads so he wouldn’t break them. My kid would break the Surface Pro 4 in less than 10 minutes!

    1. If you want to lose the new palm/hand/grip rejection tech for the touchscreen and the tablet to go absolutely insane when you pick it up, sure.

  2. MS isn’t even letting their channel teams in on the details yet. They’re keeping real hush hush on this new model.

  3. The real question for me is do they go core M (the processor that is designed for literally this form factor) or u-series core i3/5/7 again. I guess it’s almost certainly the latter given there isn’t much room to offer 3 models for price differentiation with the Core M, and the core i is what is fawned over, despite not really working in the surface chassis.

Also if they provide a full USB-C implementation? (charging/display out/usb in the same port, and a couple of them).

A super-thin bezel seems like a real damage risk for a tablet device, especially one so big and heavy. Would really like to see a step up in the base storage capacity to 128GB too.

  4. HA! I knew the Microsoft street team guy I talked to in Best Buy knew more than he was letting on. His words “if you quote me on this, I will deny anything, but this is what the rumor is… “
