Google’s new Chromecast and Chromecast Audio are tiny devices that you can plug into a TV or speaker to stream media. While Google has two different models this year, one for audio and the other for audio, video, and apps, it turns out the two Chromecast devices have remarkably similar hardware.

We already knew that the new models were powered by a Marvell Armada 1500 Mini Plus 88DE3006 processor. Now the folks at iFixit have taken apart the new Chromecast devices to see what else is under the hood.

Both models feature Marvell Avastar 88W8887 wireless receivers, which support 802.11ac WiFi, Bluetooth 4.2, NFC, and FM radio (although I don’t think either Chromecast has the hardware to support FM radio or NFC).

And both devices feature 512MB of RAM and 256MB of NAND flash storage.

The Chromecast audio lacks an HDMI connector, but features 3.5mm audio and a mini TOSLINK jack as well as a multi-directional antenna.

Google also appears to have taken steps to keep things cool with liberal application of thermal paste.

While iFixit normally assigns repairability scores to the gadgets it tears apart, the company didn’t bother with the new models since there aren’t really any parts that would be easy to replace… with the possible exception of the HDMI cable for the new Chromecast video device.
