The last time Dell offered a 2-in-1 device called the XPS 12, it was a convertible notebook with a 12.5 inch touchscreen display that could rotate 180 degrees, allowing you to fold down the lid and hold the laptop like a tablet.

Now it looks like Dell is reviving the XPS 12 name… but this time the company plans to offer a 12 inch tablet with a detachable keyboard dock. According to leaked information obtained by German site Giga, the new XPS 12 will have also have a 4K display and support for digital pen input.

Giga reports that the upcoming XPS 12 features a 12 inch, 3840 x 2160 pixel display and that it’s an “Infinity” display much like the screen on the Dell XPS 13 ultrabook. That means the bezels around the edges of the display will be super slim.

Other features are expected to include a Thunderbolt 3 port with a USB Type-C connector, an 8MP rear camera, a 5MP front camera, and a detachable keyboard dock with backlit keys and a touchpad. A magnetic locking mechanism holds the keyboard and tablet together when you want to use the computer as a notebook.

The Dell XPS 12 is expected to ship with Windows 10 and support a Dell Active Stylus for pressure-sensitive input when writing or drawing on the screen.

Dell is also expected to offer an optional desktop dock.

Pricing hasn’t been announced for the new XPS 12 yet, and we don’t know how much memory or RAM it has or what processor it uses — although I’d expect it to feature a 6th-gen Core M Skylake or faster processor.

If Giga is correct, we should know more by October. That’s when the new XPS 12 is expected to launch.

  1. What a shame. The original design of the XPS 12 is my favorite hybrid design. I’m not sure why the braindead tech press never hyped it as much as they did the useless thin bezels of the XPS 13.

The reality is that the XPS 12 is much more comfortable in the lap compared to the Surface and isn’t likely to have damaged keys the way that the Yoga series hybrids are.

The only other hybrid design that is almost as good are the ones where the screen detaches and can be reattached in either direction (facing outward or inward).

    1. Why? Viewing movies or tv shows in their native aspect ratio is so bad? Reading pdf files or viewing websites is perfectly ok on 16:9 display. I do it all day. A 16:9 display is a yes for me.

      1. If I just want a media consumption device, I can get a cheap Android tablet.

For anything else, but esp for productivity, which this Dell has the internals (and the stylus) for, 16/10 is the minimum. Better yet 4/3 like the Surface.

        1. This is simply not true. For example working on an A4 Word document on a rotated 16:9 display is perfectly fine (and better than a 4:3 display). The top menu and the bottom task bar plus the A4 page create substantially higher ratio than 4:3. This ratio is closer to 16:9.

    1. Yeah guess what: surface came first. Also you might have noticed a bunch more competition from other manufacturers like Lenovo and Toshiba at IFA

  2. I would definitely buy one of these, as long as it has reasonable battery life, and a Wacom stylus. If Dell is sticking with the Synaptics one there’s no chance I’d buy it.

  3. Is that hinge design or a kickstand, I can’t tell from the photos?

  4. I’ll wait and see what kind of active digitizer they use.
If it’s the disastrous Synaptics one that came with
the Venue Pro 8, which apparently Dell never was
    able to fix, I’ll pass.

    1. Have V2 of the Active Stylus on the Venue 8 Pro. Works well. It’s not the Surface pen, but it’s good and palm rejection works well.

The new DV8 Pro coming out is getting a Wacom enabled pen. It appears Dell is moving to that, so I’d guess this will be a Wacom stylus.

  5. How is this differ than other 2in1 laptop hybrid? Beside the spec bumps?

    1. Dell’s version of the Surface Pro. As with Lenovo, the OEM’s are finally following Microsoft’s hardware lead.

    2. Looks to have a more stable keyboard compared to something like the surface. I always wanted a 2 in 1 tablet that actually had a stable laptop style keyboard. Hopefully this is it. I am still waiting for a true 2 in 1.

      1. Dude, if you can’t adjust the angle..well..that just badly oversight!
