Amazon may be planning to offer a $50 tablet, which would be half the price of the most affordable Fire tablet the company currently offers. So how would Amazon cut the price? By cutting the specs.

While no official details have been released so far, we’re pretty sure the new tablet will have a microSD card slot, 802.11n WIFi, and Bluetooth 4.0.

Now we may have a first look at some additional specs, thanks to a listing at the GFXBench website.

If the GFXBench data is accurate (and it might not be), Amazon’s cheapest tablet could have a 6 or 7 inch, 1024 x 600 pixel display, 1GB of RAM, 8GB of storage, and a MediaTek MT8127 quad-core ARM cortex-A7 processor with Mali-450 graphics. It’s said to have a 2MP rear camera and 0.3MP front camera.

By comparison, the $99 Fire HD 6 has a 1280 x 800 pixel display, a MediaTek MT8135 processor with two Cortex-A15 and two Cortex-A7 CPU cores and PowerVR G6200 graphics. It also has 2MP rear and 0.3MP front camera, 1GB of RAM, and 8GB to 16GB of storage (but no microSD card slot).

It’a also worth noting that GFXBench says the new tablet runs Android 5.1 Lollipop software, which means it will probably ship with Amazon’s Fire OS 5.

  1. Adding the SDCard slot might put this on the map for me. I took you friggin’ forever Amazon. When are you going to learn? You try to chain me up to your “Cloud”, so I just run away from you.

  2. I see this as move to attract pre-teen and young teen users. Many of my son’s classmates are all on IM and most of them are using $100 or less tablets. They may not buy much content now, but Amazon really needs future tablet users. My son is on a 2yr old nexus 7 2013, and he loves it. I don’t expect him to ever use an apple product in the future.

  3. Problem with Amazon is their shipping is so freakin’ expensive if sending to outside USA.

I stay in Singapore and so far Aliexpress can send here cheaply using registered post.

But yes you are right, China product mostly lack of QC (Quality Control), so most of their products will spoil easily less than 1 year.

I am not saying all their products will spoil easily, reputable brand like Xiaomi normally quite durable.

  4. I don’t know why I’d care, I dislike cheap tablets, I don’t even particularly like fancy tablets…

But my 5 year old might care, as long as it can side-load Videoder, her favorite app :p

  5. Amazon must be planning an announcement for all these new products soon. Some where within the next 2 months for sure. New tablets , Fire TV etc

  6. If that’s true then they messed up, 1280×800 and quad A53 while adding a few $ make the difference between not bad for the price and garbage. You can’t just design products on BOM and ignore that the product must be used by customers.

    1. For $50 in non-China markets? Are you kidding? You’d pay more for a almost useless Smart Watch with even lower specs…

Besides, there are still people using devices with even lower specs… For those who don’t want to spend more on the pricier models and just want to do basic media consumption this will work just fine.

    1. Yes you can, but noname chinese manufacturing quality is pretty bad. Compared to amazon which has well made devices even worse.

    1. My kids are still using Archos 70 tablets in the car – 800×480 resolution.

If these will support microSDXC instead of microSDHC – they’d be fine car replacements for watching H.264 DVD rips. Basically, something like this could be considered more of a replacement for the old-school portable DVD player than a fully-fledged tablet.

    2. Resolution is relative, what matters is pixel density and screen/image quality… a 4K resolution won’t do you any good if all the other aspects of the screen are low quality…

Color intensities, color accuracy, contrast ratios, aspect ratios, view-able viewing angles, etc all matter and just the resolution will never determine the rest… Resolution by itself is virtually meaningless because it depends on the screen size it is being applied to and how far the viewer will be from the screen on average.

Like a TV can get away with low resolution because the screen is usually viewed from several feet away, versus a phone that you can have right near your face.

While a Smart Watch screen can get away with low resolution because it’s a very small screen and the pixel density for a low resolution would still be higher than it would be on a larger screen…

So keep in mind this is a less than 7″ screen (just 6.7″) and the 1024×600 resolution comes out to 177.14 for pixel density, which is higher than the 149.45 pixel density you would get from a 10.1″ screen with 1280×800 resolution… or about equivalent to a 1920×1080 resolution on a 12.4″ screen…

Besides, this is running Android and that scales pretty well regardless of resolution to the size screen…
