Most smartwatches are designed to pair with your smartphone to display notifications, media controls, and other information on your wrist. But a handful (or wristful) of smartwatches have their own cellular modems, allowing you to use them even when your phone isn’t around.

Up until now that’s a feature that hasn’t been available for watches running Google’s Android Wear software. But now LG has unveiled the first Android Wear watch to support 3G and 4G network.

The LG Watch Urbane 2nd edition is coming soon, and it basically has the specs of a tiny smartphone.

The watch features a 1.38 inch, 480 x 480 pixel round plastic OLED display, a Qualcomm Snapdragon 400 processors, 768MB of RAM, 4GB of eMMC storage, and a 570 mAh battery.

It supports WiFi, Bluetooth, GPS 3G, and 4G LTE and features an IP67 dust and water resistance case.

The LG Watch Urbane 2nd edition will be available in black, white, blue or brown colors, and features Android Wear software. While cellular data is what truly sets this smartwatch apart from others in its class, you can also pair the watch  with your phone to use like a normal Android Wear device.

  1. Wow, that looks like a BIG watch face. Definitely not for me. Though otherwise it looks potentially nice. One thing I don’t understand is how the guy is receiving a phone call on both his phone and his watch and walks away while still taking it. If it has its own 4G connection doesn’t that mean that it has its own line? (potentially with google voice but that’s not available out of the US if I’m not mistaken (and that means paying for an extra line JUST for your watch).

    1. LG is working with carriers to give you one number that rings both devices, so you can use them seamlessly from one phone number.

      1. That’s good news, as long as you only have to pay a premium (how much would depend on the details) and not full price for a second plan. Also an important question is in how many countries this might happen as I’m assuming it will be released in multiple countries and let’s not forget about the importers. I say this because it is a real issue not to get all the features with new products when it requires deals with carriers, banks, whatever (Samsung’s mobile payment platform is a good example).

  2. This is by far the best news of the year! After wasting so much time and money on crappy chinese Adnroid all in one cell phone watches, I bought the LG URBANE and have loved everything about it except having to carry a stupid phone in my pocket all day, this fixes EVERYTHING!

  3. Ok, cellular data but no speaker? At least huawei watch has a speaker. Be nice to answer calls on the watch.
I wonder if someone will put a camera…. But who really wants to video chat on a watch?

    1. It has a speaker, didnt you watch the video? Nearly everyone in the video was talking on speaker phone, from their wrist… I think the lack of audible alerts is a limitation of Android Wear, I am sure they will add it to later versions to accommodate both the LG URBANE and the Heuwhatever.
