Flip phones may have fallen out of fashion in the West, but they still pop up from time to time in Asia. LG recently unveiled an Android-powered flip phone for Korea… but now the company says the phone will be available internationally as well.

It’s called the LG Wine Smart, and at first glance it looks like a classic clamshell phone. But it’s actually a smartphone with a touchscreen display and support for Android apps.

The LG Wine Smart will launches in August in select markets including France, Italy, Japan, Kazakhstan, Poland, and Spain.

The phone has a 3.2 inch, 480 x 320 pixel display, a 1.1 GHz quad-core processor, 1GB of RAM, 4GB of storage, a microSD card slot, a 3MP rear camera, a VGA front camera, and support for 802.11b/g/n WiFi, Bluetooth 4.0, and 4G LTE.

It runs Android 5.1.1 Lollipop software, and features back, home, and recents buttons at the top of the keypad (just above a direction pad and dedicated camera, email, favorites, and contacts buttons).

The clamshell design isn’t the only thing that seems a bit retro about this phone: it also has a 1,700 mAh user replaceable battery at a time when it’s getting harder and harder to find phones with removable batteries.

  1. I love flip phones because they are so compact and they easily fit into my pocket. In fact I´m still using my Samsung E1150 as my primary phone.

But this one is quite big and I don´t see why it has to be that big. The bezels could be a lot smaller, especially bellow and above the display. And it could also be thinner if LG would throw in an AMOLED display. It might hurt the battery capacity a bit but so be it.

  2. It is a shame they didn’t put a small display on the outside for a clock, notifications, etc. like my last flip phone had.

    1. I almost always text using voice recognition. So for me the question would be how do you correct errors? 😉
