It’s only been a few months since Sony introduced the Xperia Z4 smartphone in Japan (it’s sold as the Xperia Z3 Plus in other markets), but it looks like an Xperia Z5 is already be in the works.

An image showing what appears to be a brand new Xperia Z-series phone, along with a smaller “Compact” model was posted on Twitter by @ViziLeaks.

The Xperia Z4 was criticized by some folks for looking exactly like the Xperia Z3 and packing only a few new features (including a Qualcomm Snapdragon 810 processor rather than a Snapdragon 801 chip and a higher-resolution front-facing camera).

But it looks like the upcoming Sony Xperia Z5 could have at least one feature its predecessors lacked: a fingerprint sensor.

The picture shows a power button on the side of the phone which can also be used as a fingerprint sensor. It works with biometric security software running on the phone.

The photo also shows fingerprint scanner software running on the Xperia Z5 Compact, but you can’t make out the sensor in the image. And in the center of the photo, there’s an iPhone 6, which has a fingerprint scanner built into the home button.

Detailed specs for the Sony Xperia Z5 phones aren’t yet available, but according to @ViziLeaks, the phones feature glass backs which aren’t as slippery as those on some earlier models.

  1. In earlier leaks about specs they said the scanner would be located on the side and powered by qualcomm.. whether its the 810 or 820 remains to be seen, but these low res pics dont really do the phone justice, also they could be fake because where is the SONY logo? And how the mini version is hiding its scanner… just have to wait and see, although it would be nice if the screen were bezelless like the new c5 ultra myb the z5+ will have that

    1. Seems logical that it would be. I don’t want to see the return of the “home button” on devices just to support a fingerprint reader, and rumor has it Apple wants to be rid of their home button as well. Until the technology is good enough to rea fingerprints through the screen, moving the reader somewhere else is the only logical choice.

Having it on the side would be ergonomic, though in that position you are probably only going to set up your right thumb, your left index finger, and maybe your left middle finger (if you’ve got big hands).
