Boot Camp is a software program that allows Mac users to partition their computer in order to install the Microsoft Windows operating system. Today, the company released an updated version of Boot Camp with support for Windows 10.

Boot Camp 6, which is rolling out across compatible systems now, supports 64-bit versions of Windows 10. The program automatically downloads the support software needed to use the newest Microsoft operating system when using the Boot Camp Assistant.

Windows 10

Boot Camp ensures that a Mac’s hardware is recognized by Windows, and Apple says Windows 10 should support USB 3, USB-C, Thunderbolt, SD card readers, Apple SuperDrive, and APple keyboard, trackpad, and mouse hardware.

Boot Camp 6 is only available on select Mac Pro, Mac mini, iMac, Macbook Pro, and MacBook Air computers dating back to mid 2012. Apple has a list of supported devices on the support document page.

Mac owners can either perform a new Windows 10 installation or upgrade from a 64-bit version of Windows 7 or 8.1. Windows 10 is available as an ISO file, a DVD, or a USB flash stick for $119. Upgrading from 64-bit Windows 7 or 8.1 is free. The upgrade requires 10 GB of free space on the Windows partition.

  1. Ran the update the other day on a ’11 iMac and besides some keyboard shortcut wonkiness it’s running very well.

  2. I’ve been having horrible battery life and sometimes the touchpad acts up. I already have 64 bit windows 10 installed on my 2015 retina MacBook pro.
So how do I update boot camp drivers?

    1. The Apple Update Installer will send you a notification when Boot Camp 6 is available on your MBP. The rollout is happening slowly. After Boot Camp 6 installs, you may need to remove and reinstall Windows 10 if you still have problems. Do you have the public release of Windows 10? If you have the Preview version, you should download the official one instead.

      1. I bought windows 8.1 pro and updated to windows 10.
I am trying to update boot camp but keep on getting error message when downloading it.
Why don’t they have drivers available on website?
