Archos is updating is smartphone and tablet lineup this fall. The company’s phones include low-cost Windows and Android models and a mid-range Diamond S smartphone with an octa-core MediaTek processor, 2GB of RAM, and a 720p display.

But it’s the Archos Diamond Tab that interests me most. It’s a 7.9 inch tablet with a high-resolution display, 3GB of RAM, and a UK price tag of £179.

That translates to about $276 US, but it’ll probably be cheaper if and when it goes on sale in the United States. The tablet is about the size of an iPad mini, but even based on the UK price, it’ll be substantially cheaper than an iPad… especially since that’s the price for a model with 4G LTe connectivity as well as 802.11a/b/g/n WiFi and Bluetooth 4.0.

Other features include a MediaTek MT8752 octa-core ARM Cortex-A53 processor, 32GB of storage, a microSD card slot, and a 2038 x 1536 pixel IPS display. The tablet has a 5MP rear camera with auto-focus and a 2MP fixed-focus front camera, and a 4,800 mAh battery.

The Archos Diamond Tab will ship with Android 5.1 Lollipop software.

Archos will show off the Diamond Tab at the IFA show in Berlin in September and it should be available for purchase in October.

  1. The 5 inch windows smartphone, for £99, sounds pretty interesting. Obviously, with an ARM processor, it’s essentially a Windows Phone.

  2. Well snap, you go Archos!

Seems like it is high time i replace the 80G9.

  3. There’s also a Windows tablet with that iPad Mini 2 display, the Teclast X89 HD for about $150.
It’s been around for about 9 months now, and is probably due a Cherry Trail update which should make things interesting if you like that kind of format.

    1. I’ve been reading about the X89HD, I really want to order one, but the plastic on the back is just so cheap I can’t get past that.

I’m waiting for them to sell an international version of the X98 Pro

      1. Are you sure that’s plastic on the back of the X89 ? It looks just like the back on the X98 series and those are all aluminum.

        1. The centre is aluminum, but the top and bottom are a cheap white plastic
