Sony’s latest line of flagship phones haven’t been available for very long, but it looks like the company may already be getting ready to launch a successor to the Xperia Z3+ (also known as the Xperia Z4 in select markets).

Specs for three new phones called the Xperia Z5, Xperia Z5 Compact, and Xperia Z5 Premium have been leaked by an unofficial Facebook account called Sony Georgia.

They’ll have screen sizes ranging from 4.6 inches to 5.5 inches… but perhaps the most interesting thing is that they’ll have screen resolutions ranging from 720p to 2160p.

Update: Xperia Blog has posted several leaked pictures of the phone, which seems to have a waterproof case (much like Sony’s last few flagship phones).

Update 2: A leaked video seems to confirm the specs.

Evan Blass, the formerly professional leaker better known as @evleaks, says he’s heard similar things about the upcoming phones. That adds a little credibility to the leak, but it’s still best to take these reports with a grain of salt until Sony makes an official announcement.

You might not have to wait long for that announcement though: Sony is said to be planning to introduce the new phones at its IFA event in Berlin on September 2nd.

Here’s what the rumored specs are for the new phones:

  • Sony Xperia Z5 Compact: 4.6 inch, 1280 x 720 pixel display
  • Sony Xperia Z5: 5.2 inch, 1920 x 1080 pixel display
  • Sony Xperia Z5 Premium (or Plus): 5.5 inch, 3840 x 2160 pixel (4K) display

Each phone is said to have a 23 megapixel camera with quick shutter speed, optical image stabilization, and other premium features.

There’s no word on processors, memory, or storage. But it’s a safe bet the model with the 4K display will need some pretty serious hardware to power all of those pixels.

It’s unlikely that most people will be able to see much difference between a 2160p display and a 1440p screen like the ones found on the latest high-end handsets from Samsung, Motorola, LG, and others during general use, the high-resolution display could come in handy when using a phone with Google Cardboard or another tool that lets you turn your phone into a virtual reality display. The closer to your eyeballs the phone rests, the easier it is to spot the pixels on lower-resolution displays.

  1. On the screen pixel issue, we had the power and Internet out during the start of the Seahawk’s game, so I had to stream via the NFL app. I was checking to see how close I’d have to hold the phone to have the same effective screen size as my TV, and it was way too close to be comfortable. Personally I don’t see the need for more than HD on a smartphone.

    1. I agree. 1080 is better than most people need. I like having 1440 on my Note 4, mostly for looking at photos

  2. No wonder these companies don’t make a profit, they release way to many devices.
If they would stick with a few like Motorola does and focus on users maybe they will become profitable.
But to many people are brainwashed by apple to buy anything else…

    1. I think Sony’s new phone chief is going to slow that down, but what they now call the Z5 was already in the pipeline, so cancelling that would have probably cost more than just continuing. And then there’s that whole James Bond cross marketing thing… I’m sure they don’t want to throw a wrench into that.

I think the Z5 won’t be replaced until September 2016. Would be sensible anyway.

I may not be the average phone customer, but I don’t need more speed, I’d be fine if the eventual Z6 adds nothing but still more camera improvements, provided that the rumored 4GB of RAM for the Z5 are correct.

    2. Preorder the OnePlus 2 and buy the OnePlus One for a discount only

  3. Wow, so we’re skipping the Z4 to make everyone forget about the camera heat issue? Reminds me of the Nikon D600. A defect (sensor dust) became a major objection for consumers, and as a result, the they had to move onto another model number, to wipe the issue out of the consumer’s mind.

Sony, compared to all other android phone makers, has definitely earned points in the consistency category. They have scheduled product launches, and they always have the same form factor, and overall design.

However, from the Z3 to present, I’m a little confused. The Z3+ was is the same as the Z4, and now the Z5 is going to be the successor to both?

I was really interested in buying the Z3+/Z4, regardless of all the bad press about the Snapdragon 810 heat issues, but Sony has completely snubbed North America so far. If it is to avoid bad press over the heat issues, I understand. But their lineup is a little stale right now.

    1. I prefer Sony’s subtle evolution of basically the same design. No attempt to make a slab look like something it is not.

The heat issue is very real and has caused my Z2 to come apart (literally) in less than 6 months of ownership. I wasn’t shooting 4k video either, just 1080p was enough to cook the waterproof glue holding the back panel until that popped off. The issue is made worse by the NFC chip being squeezed in near the center, exerting outward pressure on said panel.

Authorized Sony service in the place I was traveling said I’d only get warranty in the country I bought it in, and even for cash they couldn’t fix it, as they aren’t authorized to work on any of the water proof phones.

I ended up having to buy another phone – got Amazon to forward it to my Hotel… My Z2 is still in a freaking plastic bag.

I’d probably qualify as a sucker if I buy a Z5, but I’ll check if Sony finally fixed the heat issues that people have reported problems with since the Z1…

    2. Sony is just focusing on their best selling markets. In addition to that the carriers make it difficult to enter the north american market. Llike requiring them to remove certain features or having them to rebrand the phone to make it carrier specific. Only Apple and Samsung can get around this because of the money they have, hence the preferential marketing treatment they get from network providers. It’s just not worth it for Sony to invest heavily in north america, particularly USA.

      1. That’s a poor excuse, the only provider to announce the Z4 so far in the US has been Verizon, and it is branded on the face of the phone. Ontop of that, it’s being called the Z4v because of how revised it is.

There are plenty of other carriers that would have offered much easier avenues of distribution for Sony, but they chose Verizon.

I think the delays are damage control. They’re keeping the overheating issues out of consumers minds by keeping it away from the American media.

    3. So there’s another reason to not want so many pixels for your camera? They’re well beyond what I want.

        1. I’d just be happy with a much lower resolution camera than what ships with most phones, and turn the resolution down to reduce file size. But if the higher resolution also causes more heat (and more battery drain), that would be another reason to not want such a high resolution.
