OpenELEC is a Linux-based operating system designed to basically run one app: the Kodi media center. You can install OpenELEC on a PC to turn your computer into a multimedia device with a full-screen user interface for watching movies, streaming online video, listening to music, and performing other tasks.

Now the folks behind OpeneELEC have teamed up with hardware maker WeTek to launch the OpenELEC Box. It’s a limited-edition TV box that comes with OpenELEC pre-installed (plus it has the OpenELEC logo on the box).

You can order one from the OpenELEC webshop for $90.76 or 99 British Pounds.

You can connect the box to any TV to stream online video, play media from a connected hard drive or shared network drive, or run third-party Kodi plugins.

But the box is also features TV tuners, allowing you to watch or record live TV. There are models available with DVB or ATSC tuners.

While OpenELEC hasn’t released detailed specifications for the box, it appears to be based on the same hardware as the WeTek Play, which has an Amlogic AML-8726 MX dual-core ARM Cortex-A9 processor, Mali MP400 graphics, 1GB of RAM, 4GB of storage, 802.11b/g/n WiFi, Bluetooth 4.0, 10/100 Ethernet, and 3 USB ports.

But the WeTek play ships with Android-based software, while the OpenELEC box runs OpenElec and Kodi.

thanks Harley!

  1. I bought and have no regrets. It is practically the only box with tunner (DVB-C or DVB-S) at the the price of a box without tunner. I use android and openelec and both are very fast. Also, you have a great client support and oficial forum to help on any add-on installation process.

    I recommend!

  2. I’m amazed with this device, fast and friendly to use! It is practically the only box with tunner (DVB-C or DVB-S) at the the price of a box without tunner. I recommend!

  3. For $91? I would definitely get one.
Now is there any way I can get a Blu-Ray player hooked up to this?

  4. Does anyone know how many tuners and does it have epg? with schedules direst or mc2xml? and ability to record tv and encode it?

    1. I’m guessing one tuner. EPG depends on your location. In the UK EPG data is sent along with the video data for DVB t1. Different regions/systems potentially do things differently. Best to read up on how TV is delivered in your region.

    2. Looks as if N. American version is just a single tuner off the input and then a pass-through jack. The other questions are software issues with your choice of DVR backend

  5. This are good news, last days I have been noticing activity on some forums, guys making questions about OpenELEC and about WeTek. Now I know the reason.

Well, OpenELEC is giving a step further to became a standard at home with this nice box from WeTek.

  6. I have the WeTek Play, and i’m amazed with this device!
I’m currently running OpenELEC from a mSD card, with the Android on NAND

This little device has one of the best support ever!

I’m using OpenELEC 5.95.2 with TVHeadend

The possibility to have TV + Addons from Kodi/Openelec, it’s the perfect match for me

Believe me, this is one of the best deals you’ll find out there!
And off course, with the quality of openelec/kodi team

  7. No HEVC or 4K so this is this box is revolutionary and dated at the same time. Cant wait for a HEVC Dvr with Kodi preinstalled

    1. well for me is important support of openelec team and this box for sure will have it so at price of one dinner for two it is amazing deal, just finished reading comments at Kodi forum where experienced members says that device is good and have excellent support from Openelec and Kodi team as well enough for me

      1. I agree and would have bought it if I wasn’t already in the process of upgrading my whole collection to HEVC
