The Zenfone 2 is probably one of the most popular smartphones Asus has released to date. But it’s not just a single phone. There’s a whole family of products that Asus sells under the Zenfone 2 name, and now that family is getting a little bigger.

Asus has announced plans for several new phones, including the Asus Zenfone 2 Deluxe and the Asus Zenfone 2 Laser.

The road so far

Earlier this year I reviewed the Asus Zenfone 2 with 4GB of RAM, 64GB of storage, and an Intel Atom Z3580 processor. Priced at $299 in the US, the phone offered excellent performance for a mid-range phone. Asus also offers a $199 model with less memory and storage and a slightly less powerful chip.

There’s also the Asus Zenfone 2E, which is a $120 entry-level phone.

In June Asus also unveiled a 6 inch model with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 615 processor and the Zenfone Selfie with a 13MP front camera. While that model’s not called a Zenfone 2, it basically has the same design.

If you’re keeping count, that means there are 4 or 5 models in the Zenfone 2 family… with different screen sizes and resolutions, different processors, and different amounts of memory and storage.

Zenfone 2 Deluxe and Zenfone 2 Laser

This week Asus announced plans to launch several new models in India.

The first is the Zenfone 2 Deluxe, which is basically the same as a standard Zenfone 2 except that it comes with a special rear cover featuring a 3D-cut design. This model will be available with up to 4GB of RAM and up to 128GB of storage.

Update: The Deluxe should be priced at about $360.

Next up is the Zenfone 2 Laser, which features a 5 inch, 1280 x 720 pixel display, 2GB of RAM, a Qualcomm Snapdragon 410 processor, a 2,400 mAh battery, 13MP rear and 5MP front cameras, and a Corning Gorilla Glass 4 screen.

Update: The Laser includes laser auto-focus for the rear camera, and the phone should sell for about $156 and up.

Asus also plans to sell the Zenfone Selfie in India… where it is actually called the Zenfone 2 Selfie.

It’s not clear if Asus plans to offer all of these new models globally, but I found a spec sheet for the Zenfone 2 Laser at the company’s Japanese product page, and it’s expected to be available in that country in early August. So the Zenfone 2 laser doesn’t appear to be exclusive to India. ,

  1. I hope these come to the US. I’d appreciate the laser auto-focus on such a budget friendly device.

  2. Still useless if ASUS doesn’t wanna sell these unlocked phones to the largest purchasers of unlocked phones in NA, Verizon customers.

    1. Lol. You really think largest purchasers of unlock phone are Verizon customers? What are you smoking bro.

  3. When will Android OEMs get the clue and stop making so many models? Focus on one lineup and stop with the slew of devices that water-down the product line and make updating that much harder.

    1. As soon as consumers stop buying them and OEMs no longer make a profit from them.
I do agree with your thought pattern though. I wish they would all just make 1 budget, 1 mid range, and 1 high end phone, once a year and then just provide better/more updates to them.

  4. I’m interested in Pricing on the Deluxe 128gb model. I wonder if the “3D cut” rear cover is just the Illusion-series rear covers that Asus promised a while ago.

I wonder how the Laser compares to the $199 ZE500CL, which seems to be the same phone, except the Laser has a Snapdragon instead of the Intel chip. If they were similar pricing, I would go for the Intel.
