The world’s greatest video game conference, the Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3), takes place June 16 – 18. The day before the gamers’ playground party, about a half-dozen major video game development companies reveal future content.

Sony was one of those companies to reveal some big news. Ahead of the official press announcement, Wired was able to preview Sony’s upcoming virtual reality headset.

Morpheus1

First announced at E3 2014, Project Morpheus is Sony’s answer to Oculus, which recently announced it would be collaborating with Microsoft on content for the Oculus Rift.

Morpheus will launch in the first half of 2016 for an estimated “several hundred dollars.”

The headset has a 5.7-inch OLED display with 1920 x RGB x 1080 resolution. The wide, 90-degree screen expands the field of view and supports low persistence, which eliminates motion blur.

The gear has a latency rate of less than 18 milliseconds and renders images at 120 frames per second. There are also nine LEDs across the headset for 360 degree tracking.

Morpheus creates two sets of images, one streams to the virtual reality headset while the other is displayed on the TV so others can see what you are doing. The headset also features immersive 3-D audio technology.

The VR headset will work with the PlayStation DualShock 4 wirless controller, as well as PlayStation Move, which is a specially designed virtual reality controller system.

Morpheus will be the first virtual reality headset to link directly to a video game console, unlike Oculus, which connects to a computer. It is designed for PS4.

Morpheus will be multiplayer compatible including a new competitive mech game called RIGS.

Sony also announced that approximately 20 virtual reality supported games will be available when Morpheus launches, including its own brand, as well as third-party developers.

During Sony’s press conference, a number of game developers also announced some much-anticipated titles that will be coming to PlayStation 4 between now and 2016, including The Last Guardian, Horizon: Zero Dawn, a new Hitman title, Street Fighter V, Destiny: The Taken King, Assassin’s Creed: Syndicate, World of Final Fantasy, and the Final Fantasy VII remake and more.

Plus, PlayStation Vue, a cloud-based streaming media service, is nearly ready for launch. Sony plans to over à la-carte style options from such media giants as Showtime, Fox, and a new channel from Machinima.

Now, it is just a waiting game to see which virtual reality headset leads the market. Both Oculus Rift and Morpheus have heavy game content backing, so they should be able to stay on top in the emerging VR market.

  1. Design is somewhat reminiscent of the old Sony Glasstron. If only Sony had the insight to put a few motion sensors in it back then.
