Chinese startup OnePlus released one of the best smartphones you could get for the money in 2014… if you could get one. The OnePlus One was widely praised for its high-performance hardware, custom Android software, and low-starting price. But limited supplies of the phone meant that until recently you had to jump through some hoops to get your hands on the One.

Now OnePlus is getting ready to launch the OnePlus 2. And it’s holding an unusual launch event… in virtual reality.

The company has already lets us know a few things about its second smartphone:

  • It’ll feature a Qualcomm Snapdragon 810 v2.1 octa-core processor with a top clock speed of 1.8 GHz.
  • It’ll have a USB Type-C connector for charging and for hooking up peripherals.
  • It’ll sell for more than $322 (although it’s not yet clear how much more).

Part of the OnePlus low-budget marketing machine is to release details like these one at a time and to hold promotional stunts. So maybe it’s not surprising that the company’s launch event for the OnePlus 2 will be held in virtual reality.

OnePlus says that users can tune into the launch event at 7:00PM Pacific Time on July 27th, 2015. To participate, you can use a Google Cardboard headset to turn your phone into a virtual reality viewer. Or soon you’ll be able to get a custom model from OnePlus for free (plus the cost of shipping).

  1. Might as well be in VR,,as its seem their stock of phones in Virtual most of the time ..i will stay with companies that actually produce physical phones…that are i stock !!! not in cyberspace.

  2. What’s the point of selling at cheap price if 1plus cannot make enough quantity for their prospective buyers ?

Xiaomi also selling very good quality and cheap mobile phones and they keep producing millions and millions of their mobile phone. And yet also always sold out.

My point is 1 plus should just produce their products as many as they can, no need to worry as it will always sold out if their quality is good and price is cheap.

So i don’t understand why 1plus keep insisting using their annoying invite system. In the end their buyers will lost interest as they cannot wait anymore for months and months !

  3. I’m not starting that game playing again…Never settle,,,how about NEVER AGAIN.

    1. Or just order it from china if you’re outside the US. £270 from the store but unavailable due to the invite system vs £270 from china where they’re filling the shelves. Knocked months off my waiting time and had the exact same band coverage (though if I went to the US I would suddenly be on 2G only, hence it’s for folk outside there only)
