There’s no shortage of Bluetooth speakers on the market, but based on a recommendation from The Wirecutter, when I was looking for a portable speaker last year I picked up a UE Mobile Boombox (which is an older version of the popular UE Mini Boom from Ultimate Ears, a subsidiary of Logitech). It’s a compact speaker that sounds surprisingly good for its size, and which offers long battery life so you can use it for hours at a time without stopping to recharge.

I mostly use it to listen to internet radio while cooking in my kitchen, but I’ve also used the speaker while exercising, painting, or doing other work around the house — and it was my hotel room work buddy on my latest trip to Las Vegas for the annual Consumer Electronics Show.

But there’s one place the UE Mini Boom has never gone: the shower. It’s not waterproof.

Now UE has a new model that is.

The new UE Roll is the company’s new speaker which has the same $100 list price as the Mini Boom, but a new design that’s sturdier and which broadcasts sound at a 360-degree angle rather than straight ahead.

The UE Roll has a IPX7 waterproof rating, which means it can continue working when submerged in a meter of water for a half hour — so it should be safe to use in the shower or even a swimming pool — although it’ll sink to the bottom of the pool unless you place it atop a flotation device. In fact, if you order from the UE website, Ultimate Ears will throw in a “Floatie” for free.

You can also strap to your wrist, swimsuit or other objects thanks to the bungee cord that comes with the speaker.

I’m still pretty happy with my UE Mobile Boombox. But it’s nice to know that when it does come time to replace it, there will be a splash-proof version that should be safer to use in the kitchen.
