A few years ago Motorola introduced a smartphone that shook up the idea of what we should expect from a low-cost smartphone. The 2013 Moto G sported a 720p display, a quad-core processor, and decent build quality for under $200, at a time when most phones in that price range cut quite a few more corners.

A year later Motorola launched an updated model with a bigger screen, a better camera, and improved speaker placement.

Now it looks like a 3rd-gen model is on the way.

moto g 2015

This weekend HelloMotoHK posted a few pictures of phone that’s said to be the 2015 Moto G. A video is also making the rounds.

Both reportedly show a prototype of the 3rd-gen Moto G, and if the details are accurate, here’s what we can expect from Motorola’s next version of the phone:

  • 5 inch, 1280 x 720 pixel display
  • Qualcomm Snapdragon 410 processor
  • 1GB of RAM
  • 8GB of storage + microSD card slot
  • 2,300 mAh battery
  • 13MP rear camera
  • 5MP front camera

That would mean the new phone has a higher-resolution rear camera and a newer (but not entirely new) processor than last year’s model. The 2nd-gen Moto G has a Snapdragon 400 chip, while the 3rd-gen model would have Qualcomm’s newer, 64-bit Snapdragon 410 chip based on ARMv8 architecture.

For the most part, it looks like the new model still has the specs of a budget phone though… and I kind of wonder if Motorola will continue to charge $180 for a device with specs that would have looked great a few years ago, but which are less impressive today.

There are a growing number of affordable Android smartphones with decent specs, including the $199 Asus Zenfone 2 with 2GB of RAM, 16GB of storage, and an Intel Atom Z3560 Moorefield processor or the $249 OnePlus One with a Snapdragon 801 processor, 3GB of RAM, and 16GB of storage. It’s harder for a budget smartphone to stand out in 2015 than it was in 2013.

That said, we don’t know yet whether the specs for the 3rd-gen Moto G have been finalized or even if the photos and videos really show a new Moto G device. We might not know for a few more months… Motorola unveiled the first two members of the Moto G family in an October and a September, respectively. It seems likely that the next model won’t be officially introduced until closer to the fall.

  1. Other websites like evleaks are calling this the Moto x 2015, so I doubt anyone knows the specs of either phone for sure yet either. I wouldn’t get too upset at the info until it’s verified

  2. ‘Spensive, behind the times. If it is running Kit-Kat, then it all adds up – The Lenovo Effect! Forget about ever seeing any software updates too. Oh, and I forgot about the bonus malware it comes pre-loaded with.

    1. 720p isn’t a big deal but they should really increase the RAM to 2GB.

      1. I would agree. I would actually like to see a flagship level smartphone come with a lower resolution screen which sucks less power.

        1. My mother has a ZTE ZMAX with a 720p screen and snapdragon 400 and it has longer battery life than my OnePlus One with a 1080p screen and Snapdragon 801. The OnePlus One only feels a little faster than that phone.

    1. Exactly. They need to increase the RAM to 2GB atleast, CPU to SD615 and screen to 1080p, keep it under $200. Will be a hit then.

      1. If they drop the price to $149, for the 3G model, they’ll probably still sell a bunch. Not everyone wants to carry a 5.5″ inch phone around with them, and I suspect that the specs will be “good enough” for the majority of users.

        1. If there was no competition, you would be right. But now we have Idol 3, Zenfone 2, etc. so SD410, 1GB RAM, 720p screen don’t cut it anymore unless it is $120.

          1. There’s no phone the quality of the Moto G anywhere close to $120. I don’t think you realize just how price sensitive many cell phone buyers are. Once you get down. The $149 – $179 price range is a completely different market segment to $250 – $300 phones (i.e. almost double the price). Even at $179, the new Moto G will probably sell fine.

          2. The problem (for me, anyway) is that none of those are supported on Verizon as far as I can tell, not Verizon prepaid anyway, which is what I use.

    2. Didn’t they subsequently put out an LTE version of the 2014 G?

I have a 3G 2014 MotoG. It was fantastic at first. And then it got to be unusably sluggish.

I think 8GB is fine as long as there’s a microSD card slot. Those cards are cheap these days and you can add however much storage you need.

And I agree that lots of people (me included) don’t want a gigantic 5.5″+ phone, so keeping it 5″ is not a problem.

OnePlus is claiming that the 810 is a lot more expensive than the older processors.

At this point it’s all speculation.

      1. “Didn’t they subsequently put out an LTE version of the 2014 G?”
It’s for sale in Brazil only I believe.

        1. UK too.. and in that case probably other European countries.LTE 5″ Moto G with 8MP rear camera version has been available on the high street (read “bricks and mortar”) stores since last year (NB was also dual SIM).

  3. If this is Android 5.1.1 then why does it says “Java VM: Dalvik”.. isn’t ART the default VM in Lollipop?

  4. I got a Verizon prepaid Moto g for only $24 after tax. 3g only and no sd card but I am really impressed with it.
I hope this 2015 model has lte, they need to step it up to compete with oneplus one, asus zenfone 2, and Alcatel Idol 3.
There is also the Huawei p8 Lite, my sister has one but it doesn’t have usb otg, so keep that in mind.
All those phones are between $200-$300

  5. …or the $249 OnePlus One with a Snapdragon 801 processor, 2GB of RAM, and 16GB of storage.

    Wait..is it not 3 GB?

        1. Did you sign up to receive replies to your comments via email?

That would be the only reason I can think of. We’ve been getting a lot of comment spammers lately. But we don’t ever provide the email addresses of users to third parties.

    1. That’s not even enough ram for a tablet, but with a phone you’re more likely to be running multiple apps.
